What Is The Proper Way Of Cleaning and Replacing the Humidifier Filter
Humidifiers are used in most homes to increase the relative humidity in dry and arid conditions
. These clean the air by removing unwanted particles like dust, dirt and fungus to provide a healthy indoor environment. If used daily, these need to be cleaned once a week to ensure proper and trouble free performance.
Steps for proper cleaning of humidifier are as follows:
1. Unplug the humidifier and remove the filter
2. Remove the mineral built up This can be done by pouring undiluted white vinegar into the base and letting it remain there for half an hour. It needs to be occasionally shaken to ensure that it covers the entire base. A soft brush can be used a couple of times to remove the minerals.
3. Disinfect the humidifier After the humidifier has been cleaned, the base can be either filled with clean water and liquid chlorine. This can be kept in for about half an hour prior to being rinsed.
4. Replace the filter The filter needs to be replaced when it gets damaged. The damage can be delayed by use of soft water, regular cleaning and maintenance.
Precautions:
Do not forget to check the user manual for any specific steps that may vary from humidifier to humidifier.
The disinfectants used should have the capability to restrict if not eliminate the growth the germs and bacteria. The best choice is white vinegar.
The unit should not be plugged in.
Portable humidifiers have to be carried carefully to avoid damage while transportation.
While cleaning the humidifier, gloves and safety equipment should be used.
The humidifier must be disinfected prior to reinstallation or storage.
If a part begins to rust, it must be replaced with a new part immediately.
Replacement of filter
The filter needs to be replaced whenever there is a visible build up of minerals or dust. Even if nothing is visible, it should be replaced at least once a year as the filters can be covered with microscopic particles. The number of times the filter needs to be changed is directly proportional to the frequency of use.
The steps to be followed for replacing the filter are as follows:
The unit needs to be unplugged and the water tank should be emptied.
Fill the tank with cold water and household bleach needs to be added to remove built up of bacteria and moulds.
Now the top of the humidifier or the motor housing is to be removed. Any dust or dirt can be vacuumed away from the humidifier.
Filter needs to be taken out of the unit; some of them are replaceable while others need to be replaced with a new filter.
To assemble the unit back, all the steps mentioned above need to be followed in reverse.
