What Is The Singapore Math Method?
The Singapore Math Method is a technique of teaching mathematics to primary and secondary
students based on the national math curriculum of the country of Singapore.The government of Singapore began crafting the Method in 1982, when it abandoned foreign-imported math curricula in favor of developing a unique alternative.
The method has been gaining popularity in North America since the release of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (2003), which placed Singapore as first in the world in 4th and 8th grade math performance.Upon the release of these statistics, many parents who home schooled their children found the Method extremely useful.North American private and public schools soon took notice of the remarkable results achieved with this new math teaching method.
Unlike the traditional North American model of re-teaching math concepts at the beginning of each semester or school year as a precursor to new material, the Singapore Math Method builds upon previous levels under the assumption that previous material does not need to be taught again.Students take a placement exam to determine what level they need to begin at.The program focuses on imbuing an in-depth understanding of essential math skills.
Because more time is spent on each mathematical concept, many teachers feel that the Singapore Math Method progresses at a significantly slower rate than more traditional curriculums.However, results indicate that students gain a stronger handle on complex or abstract concepts in the long run, and do not have to constantly review and refresh their memories of previously covered topics.As a result, mathematical learning actually progresses at a markedly quicker pace.
The Singapore Math Method emphasizes problem solving and model drawing.Students are encouraged to progress as slow a rate as necessary for them to completely master the skill, before advancing to more complex concepts.
The Method centers on developing the components of concepts, skills, processes, attitudes and metacognition.With each of these pillars properly fostered and developed, students should be able to solve both abstract and real-world mathematical problems.
The Singapore Method relies on workbooks with extremely simple to read and understand text, and concise graphics.Textbooks are presented sequentially, with each subsequent text building upon the concepts mastered in the previous text.Accelerated students and those requiring additional time may both progress at their own, natural pace.Students are encouraged to creatively construct their own reasoning in applying concepts and skills, rather than relying on impractical memorization techniques.
Finding a
Singapore math school can be difficult, as the method is resource demanding and requires specialized teacher training to master.However, many private elementary schools in the Toronto area offer Singapore Math Method curriculums.
