. In this article we will work to unravel the story behind emulsified omega 3 fish oil, along with a few tips on picking the best fish oil supplements.
Omega 3 fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats
Omega 3 fatty acids are just what they sound like. They are fats! They are classified in a larger category of fats known as polyunsaturated fats which also includes corn, safflower, soybean, and sunflower oils. All of these fats have been shown to lower total blood cholesterol. While this sound great at first there is a downside, and that is that all of these oils, except for fish oil, also lower heart protective HDL cholesterol as well.
As you can see this gives fish oil a big advantage over the other oils in the pursuit of cardiovascular health. The other good news is that these beneficial oil derived from fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, hoki) are believe to prevent blood cells for attaching themselves to the inside of blood vessels thus reducing the buildup of dangerous arterial plaque.
So what is the story behind emulsified omega 3 fish oil?
If you were to sprinkle a few drops of polyunsaturated oil, or any type of non emulsified oil in water for that matter, what you would find is that it beads up. In other words oil and water simply don't mix willingly. In our bodies a similar scenario is occurring due to the high percent of water in blood and tissue.
To overcome this the body must emulsify these oils to make them available for different functions including metabolism. The liver does much of the work along with substances such as lecithin.
So the bottom line is that when you purchase an emulsified fish oil supplement you are buying a product which has been molecularly altered in a way that allows the body to process it more easily.
Does it really matter?
A good argument could be made that emulsified omega 3 fish oil probably is slightly more effective than non emulsified products, especially if a person has lost some liver function. Emulsified oil also will be faster acting, and some might argue, even easier overall on your body.
These is no doubt there are some advantages but in the end there are more important factors to worry about when purchasing fish oil such as purity and DHA/EPA content.
Certainly if you can find an emulsified omega 3 fish oil product that is meets your expectations for purity, DHA/EPA content, and is also emulsified you should probably take advantage, but emulsification should not necessarily be your primary purchasing criteria.
The standards I use when purchasing
omega 3 fish oil are to have at least 300 mg of DHA/EPA per tablet, buy in softgel form, and purchase only products that are 99.99% pure. An additional tip is to give a little extra weighting to those which are made from fish which are considered to have less toxins in the wild, such as the Australian hoki. Emulsification is a big plus in my opinion, but only ranks a distant third behind DHA/EPA content and product purity.
