What Is Ultrafiltration Used For?
Ultrafiltration is a means of filtering certain liquids to remove unwanted substances from them
. Hydrostatic pressure is used to force the liquid against a membrane that is semi-permeable; the fluid passes through the membrane while solids are kept back. Usually, it is those solids that have a high molecular weight that are filtered from the substance.
There are many applications where this form of filtration is used. The membranes used should be capable of being submerged, back flushed, or scoured by air. Many membranes used for this process are spiral wound. This means that they consist of layers of membrane and supporting material that are wound around a tube. While this provides a large surface area that is relatively cheap, it is quite sensitive to pollution.
Another type of membrane is the tubular membrane where the fluid flows through the core and is collected in the tubular housing. This is often used for poor quality fluids, but is quite expensive. The third type of membrane is a hollow fibre with several small tubes for the solution to flow through.
One example of this type of filtration is in kidney dialysis; another is when patients have too much water and salts in their blood and it is filtered to restore the blood to normal. However, there are other applications that have more to do with making food than saving peoples lives. It can be used to thicken milk before it is used to make cheese, to clarify fruit juice, recover vaccines from the fermentation broth and disinfect drinking water, to mention just a few.
Another means of purifying drinking water is by UV disinfection. Amazingly enough, ultraviolet light kills viruses, bacteria, protozoa and algae and does so much faster and more efficiently than chlorine. Better still, UV light is much cheaper; it is natures own method of cleaning out those germs.
This technology could be used in wastewater treatment systems instead of chlorine as it is so cost efficient and does not require storage containers for the water, nor is there any likelihood of an overdose of dangerous chemicals being put into the water. It is also safe, economical and does not change the taste of the water like chlorine does. However, UV light from the sun is not strong enough; it is screened out by the earths atmosphere. Instead, electrical energy is converted by using a low pressure, mercury vapour quartz lamp.
