What Is Urinary Incontinence And How To Treat It

Experiencing a little bit of a bladder leak when you cough

, sneeze, or laugh can be uncomfortable. When a leak turns into a flood the consequences are downright embarrassing. Lots of people suffer from a weak bladder or an overactive bladder, sometimes because of old age, but at other times because of a medical condition. It is especially common in women after the birth of a child. Some complain that they never fully regain control of their bladders even when the kids are grown up. Men with prostate issues also suffer from the need to empty a nearly-empty bladder all night long.

A Weak or Overactive Bladder

A weakened bladder is common among women, but even men suffer from this condition. An overactive bladder simply wants to be emptied all the time. There are several possible solutions to these problems:

-practice pelvic floor exercises which involve clenching the muscles involved in going to the bathroom, as if to hold back the urge to pee

-training the bladder to hold on longer between each trip to the toilet

-learning to fully empty the bladder each time you go to the toilet

-altering eating and drinking habits (such as limiting caffeine intake)

-using a magnet to strengthen the muscles

This last approach is still undergoing scientific study, but research shows that magnets exhibit some promise. A client simply tapes a magnet over the bladder or straps it inside a pouch on a belt so that it can send an electrical current to the place that needs it. Although the medical community continues to study magnets, alternative therapists have been using them for years and insist they are successful.

Women will often recover the use of their muscles in the weeks and months following the birth of a child if they train pelvic floor muscles during and after pregnancy.

Other Treatments

There are times when simple solutions are not going to work. The bladder has been compromised, or there are other issues responsible for the problem. Doctors will then suggest one of the following:

-inserting a supportive device into the urethra

-prescribing medication (especially for an overactive bladder)

-injections

-surgery

Physicians always opt to take the least invasive route possible, so they begin with physiotherapy and training exercises. Surgery would be the last resort. Devices can be put in and taken out by the client and cleaned regularly.

If All Else is Inadequate

One of the above mentioned approaches may prove helpful, but does not completely clear up urinary incontinence. If this is so, clients will join the many men and women around the world who suffer from this problem and simply purchase absorbent pads. Another option is to use a catheter to adequately empty the bladder.
