What Is Velcro Cable Management?
You need velcro to create velcro cable management
To understand what velcro cable management means, one first needs to understand a little about the history of velcro material.
The term Velcro is a registered trademark and an example of a generic term like Kleenex or Jell-O where consumers use the word to refer to all hook and loop product. In reality, VELCRO is the name of a registered group of companies and their trademark and not the proper term for all hook and loop products. Therefore, if you want to be technically correct, one should use the term hook and loop to refer this type of product and then use the term velcro if you are looking specifically for that brand or the group of companies.
In the early 1940s, George de Mestral invented Velcro. de Mestral was walking his dog when the dog brushed up against a bush that was covered in burrs. Some of the burrs stuck to his dog. It occurred to de Mestral that the burrs thorns were engaged onto his dogs fuzzy coat. He pondered this interaction between hook and a fuzzy loop and what practical applications it might hold? This simple dog walk was the inspiration behind velcro, a material made from thorny-like hooks and fuzzy loops. The complete history of velcro is quite interesting including how it lead to the wide variety of hook & loop products offered today.
So what is velcro cable management?
In 1994 Speedtech International Incorporated, located in Racine, Wisconsin began designing and fabricating finished products from a new Velcro branded material called ONE-WRAP. Speedtech fabricated ties and straps designed to bundle, route and secure cables, wires and fiber. Previously, routing, bundling and securing cables and wires was done exclusively with products like nylon cable ties, wire mold and raceway. This class of products helped create a category referred to as cable management products.
One of the first manufacturers designing finished products out of hook and loop (velcro) for the purpose of managing wires and cables was Speedtech. For this reason, Speedtech is considered a pioneer of velcro cable management. Speedtechs President and Founder, Chris Karnowski, states, Hook and loop cable ties, straps and tape lend themselves perfectly to bundling and securing wiring and cables. Because hook and loop is gentle on the wires and does not have sharp edges that could wear through the protective coating of these cable, velcro style ties are considered ideal for Cat-5 cables and fiber-optic cabling.
Ss the product category velcro cable management grew in popularity and acceptance, major MRO, Data-communications, Telecom, Electrical and other Industrial manufacturers and distributors began offering, back-to-back style, velcro cable management products. Examples include, Anixter, McMaster-Carr, Profichium, and Hellermann-Tyton. As demand grew, so did the number of number of companies fabricating hook and loop material to create cable management solutions.
Velcro Cable Management, Today:
The number of companies manufacturing velcro cable management products has also grown. Most of these manufacturers are reselling ties and straps made by Velcro USA, or they are fabricating out of the back of their distribution warehouse. There are however a few companies that not only resell branded solutions like Velcros ONE-WRAP but also have substantial factory space dedicated to fabricating velcro style ties and straps. It is important to find a company with a large and diverse product offering, who is willing to listen to your application questions and who can provide solutions at competitive prices.
In addition to managing cables, the demand for identifying cables has also grown. Most customers do this by purchasing hook and loop ties and straps in various colors. These colors help installers identify certain types of wires or help them remember where those wires are directed. The demand for velcro printing has also grown. There are both lower grade and higher quality versions of custom imprinting on velcro. Steve Pope, Speedtechs Vice President of Marketing explains, We employ a proprietary method for imprinting on hook and loop that improves the images longevity and clarity. This is ideal, for example, for companies or installers who want to have their company name, logo or website printed on straps that they will in turn sell or give away to their customers. Years later their customers need only look at the ties on those wires to know whom to contact for more products or service. To me its kind of like the HVAC repair guy leaving his sticker on the AC so I know who to call for future help. Its quite effective. Other companies logo their straps so that the cables themselves are identified. This application is popular with production companies, music venues, musicians and photographers and others. Velcro printing is offered by almost all hook and loop Distributors and photos of Speedtechs proprietary printing method (velcro printing) are available online.
