What Is an Aesthetician?

Ever wondered if you're treating your skin the way it should be treated? There are professionals who can answer that question for you. An aesthetician, or esthetician, specializes in skin care treatment, and they can not only diagnose your skin type and condition, but they can offer treatments for those issues.

Aesthetician Training

Generally, a person becomes an aesthetician by studying at a beauty school. At that school, they focus on skin care and skin treatments. Some community colleges also offer esthetician training programs; look on the Austin Community College site for possible degree programs. The Continuing Education department of ACC may also offer a certificate for skin care. Generally, a licensed aesthetician takes anywhere from 4 months to a year to train. It almost always involves an internship; you don't want someone who's never waxed before giving you a bikini wax. Texas, as well as every other state, requires practicing estheticians to hold a license in their field. However, the more extensive skin care treatments generally need a more concentrated license, forcing aestheticians to continue their education as skin care technology progresses.

Aestheticians Are Not Doctors

Despite their qualifications as skin care professionals, it's important to remember that an aesthetician is not a doctor. They've not gone through the comprehensive training it takes to become a dermatologist, though they may work at a dermatology clinic. They are not qualified to perform any procedure which breaks the skin, and they are not qualified to give medical advice. However, they are qualified to give advice on skin conditions, such as acne and rosacea.

Services Aestheticians Offer

Estheticians take care of the cosmetic skin care options available at a dermatology clinic or a day spa, including:

Facials

Skin Consultations

Chemical Peels

Laser Hair Removal

Brow Shaping

Lash & Brow Tinting

If any of these services might apply to you, call Zimmet Vein & Dermatology in Austintoday to schedule an appointment with their licensed aesthetician.
