What It Takes To Be A Wow Coach
When you finish coaching your employees, are they inspired and confident when they leave your office
? Or are they experiencing the same old hum-drum feelings that they had when they went into your office? In order for your coaching to be effective in influencing your employees, it is critical that your employees leave your office inspired and committed to changing their behaviors.
Our behaviors as leaders will either inspire our employees or leave them feeling complacent. What behaviors should we be doing as leaders to inspire our employees? Take a look at this list of leadership behaviors that inspire our employees for greater success.
Are you asking questions or are you just telling your employees what to do? An inspiring leader asks questions and involves employees in an engaging dialogue. It is important that leaders understand how to dig into discussions to help employees to explore new ideas, uncover customers' viewpoints and recommit to the behaviors that will help your company achieve its goals.
Are you modeling what you expect from your employees or just expecting them to do as you say? The most inspiring behavior is to demonstrate the skills that you expect from your employees. When they see you communicate with ease, strategize with other departments and develop creative ideas, they will be more likely to model what they experience from you. If you are expecting others to do something that you do not demonstrate yourself, your coaching will be a long and difficult road.
Are you creative in your coaching techniques? Inspiring others is all about being creative and individualizing your mentoring strategies. Are you putting your employees in the shoes of your customers, are you showing videos to demonstrate your points and are you designing visual aids to remind your employees of the standards? These types of creativity keep people looking for more and entice them to think creatively themselves.
Are you genuine or are you putting up a front? There is nothing more inspiring than seeing true authenticity at work. Are you showing your employees the real you and relating to them as fellow human beings? Another way to look at this is whether you would consider your behaviors to be of a humble nature.
Do your employees look at you and trust what you are doing and saying? The hardest person to look at is ourselves but it is important that we look within ourselves and see us as our employees see us.
Are your words filled with purpose and grace? Our method of communication is important to how we inspire others. Our words define who we are and how others see us. Are you seen as someone who acknowledges the accomplishments of others and empowers them to excel? Examine your words to understand more of what your communication is saying about you.
These are the most essential foundations of being an inspirational coach. But knowing what to be is the easy part, actually being this type of coach is a bit more challenging than it seems at first glance. So where do you start in becoming this inspirational coach? Here are some immediate steps to take if you are looking to raise your ability to be inspirational to others.
Take an honest look at yourself and admit that we are not all that we can be. The first step in making a change in ourselves is to be willing to look within ourselves and acknowledge what we see. If you look at yourself and think that this is all there is and you are "good enough" you are probably selling yourself (and your employees) short. Look closely and open your heart to bigger and better possibilities.
Be willing to accept feedback. This is actually a bigger deal than it seems. It is easy to ask someone else, "What do you think?" But now focus on what you do when they start telling you what they think. Are you keeping an open mind to the feedback or do you find yourself immediately making excuses or getting defensive? We need to go beyond accepting feedback and be receptive to taking in the feedback and acknowledging the truthfulness behind the opinions of others.
Ask questions of your employees and then ask more questions. At first your employees may tell you what they think you want to hear. But if you keep asking and tell them that you want their honest opinions, you will eventually uncover their true feelings. Don't just ask once and think that you are done with that exercise.
Keep digging and letting others know that you desire to be the best coach that you can be and that you need their help to do that. You may not always hear what you want to hear, but keep telling yourself that your goal is to become a more inspirational leader.
Observe others who inspire you and identify what it is that makes that leader inspiring. It is important for you to develop your own style, but observing others and staying aware of what inspires you will help to prompt new behaviors in yourself.
Develop a plan. Now that you have looked inside yourself, asked others' opinions and identified what inspires you, it is now important to put a plan together. What would you like to do differently? More importantly, what do you need to do differently in order to be a more inspirational coach?
An inspirational mentor paves the way for making a difference in this world and leaves a path filled with goodness and grace. An inspirational leader is constantly looking for opportunities to influence the lives of others in positive ways. What can you do differently to be a more inspirational coach?
