What Kind Of Rum Should You Have?
Grand parties and carnivals are never complete without pegs of fine drinks
. Rum is a popular drink on such special occasions. Rums make great mixers and are used in punches, shooters and cocktails. You might be familiar with the fact that Rums are made out of distilled and fermented sugarcane molasses. But the history of Rum"s origin is quite interesting.
Rums have their origin in the Caribbean where African slaves working in sugar cane fields discovered a way to make Rum from the leftover molasses. From then on, the drink became popular to such an extent that today we have several brands offering a variety of Rums. At times, people get confused regarding what kind of Rum they should have. In that case, it will be good to have a brief acquaintance with different kinds of Rums and then go for the one that suits the best.
Rums have strong alcohol content. There are two basic types of Rum prepared in the distilleries:
Dark Rum
Dark Rum has a rich sweet taste. It gets its characteristic taste and color when aged for long time in wooden casks. Addition of caramel makes Dark Rum even darker.
Light Rum
Light Rum is aged for shorter periods and has a sweet dry taste. There are no additives added to Light Rum. It is preferred as a base for cocktail mixes. White Rums are mixed with Coke to give them a distinct flavor.
Rums are made into punches and cocktails at banquets and get-togethers. They serve as a light accompaniment to the food served. Here are some common kinds of Rum which are more popular:
Gold Rums: Gold Rums are aged for several years in wooden barrels which gives them their characteristic dark color. In the process, they become smooth and mild. They fall in the category somewhere between dark and white varieties.
Spiced Rums: Spiced Rums are mixed with spices and herbs to give a twist to the flavor. Dark and strong in taste, Spiced Rums are sometimes made from cheaper varieties of Rums darkened with caramel.
Flavored Rums: Flavored Rums are punches made from a mix of fruits with about 40 percent alcohol content.
Over Proof Rums: Over proof Rums have somewhere from 60 to 75 percent alcohol content.
Premium Rums: Premium Rums are aged and produced carefully to give a distinct taste and are consumed straight.
Choosing the right Rum for the right occasion is not a big deal provided you know the pros and cons of different varieties. Now that you know about so many varieties of Rums, you won"t have to think much about the kind of Rum that you can have.
