What Kind Of Side Effects Can I Expect After Liposuction?
Undergoing surgery is never easy
Undergoing surgery is never easy. First there is the anesthesia that leaves you loopy and sometimes a bit sick for a while afterwards. When having a surgery performed, make sure there is someone to drive you to and from the hospital as you will more than likely not be up to driving. If you are staying in a hospital overnight, make sure you pack comfortable clothes that are easy to slip on and arrange all you need to so as not to stress during your hospital stay.
Swelling is a very common side effect of liposuction. Swelling shouldn't get in the way of your everyday life and shouldn't be a large concern. If you notice a lot of swelling, try not to get too nervous. However, if the swelling comes with secretion of strange fluid or bleeding, call your doctor right away. These could be signs of infection. In general, all swelling should decrease within a few weeks of the surgery.
Bruising is another typical side effect. Although bruising is very common it can sometimes be painful. Be prepared to follow all of your doctor's directions in order to make your healing process as quick and pain-free as possible! Bruises also should disappear within a month or so of the procedure. It is very important to let your doctor know what you are feeling and any changes you see in your body during your follow-up appointments. The best treatment during the healing process is effective communication between doctor and patient. This will keep the focus on what the doctor can do to help you feel better.
Scarring is also very normal in the course of healing after liposuction. Scars tend to be small and start to fade as early as a week after the surgery. Some scars, when faded, can be permanent so be sure to speak to your doctor before the procedure in order to be prepared. Whenever preparing for surgery, it is always better to be prepared.
Other possible side effects include blood clots, negative reactions to anesthesia, stroke, excessive bleeding and others. Although these side effects are serious, they are not entirely common. If you notice anything unusual, you should report them to your surgeon immediately as you may have to return to the hospital.
Keep in close touch with your doctor as you recover from your liposuction. Let him/her know if there is anything that concerns you. Be cautious and follow all of your doctor's instructions and you will more than likely enjoy a safe recovery!
