What Makes A Good Bodybuilding Diet?

No less of an authority than Vince Gironda, The Iron Guru himself

, once said that bodybuilding is 80% diet.

Having had no small amount of success as a bodybuilder in the past, Vince is known less for his own bodybuilding than for being the trainer behind one of the best known bodybuilders of all time, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

His acolytes list reads like a who's who in bodybuilding of the 1950s through 1997.

Vince was convinced that a bodybuilding diet was the key to muscle-building success, and he was fundamental in convincing other people of this principle in his multi-decade career as a trainer of champions.


A good bodybuilding diet should consist of high quality proteins and nuts, healthy carbohydrates from fresh fruits and vegetables and a carefully controlled intake of healthy fats and oils. In addition, bodybuilders should make sure to take supplements which assist them in building new muscle and shedding subcutaneous fat.

Renowned biologist, Bernard Beverley, stated that human tissue is 100% biological. What that means for bodybuilders is that eating foods that are very high in biological content is very important for developing that tissue as far as possible. Lots of people confuse foods high in biological content with foods high in protein, but this isn't entirely the case as not all protein is the same. Biological content means food that contains protein of a structure that is very similar to the protein contained in human tissue.

This might come as a surprise to some, but the food with the highest biological content is the humble egg! Other foods high in biological content include raw milk,organ meats (heart, liver, kidneys and sweetbreads),steak, lamb, poultry and fish. Beans, legumes and some other vegetables are also good sources of protein, so it's really important to include them in your diet as well.

However, soybeans, as high in protein as they are, happen to have a readily bioavailable protein content of only 22%! This means that you would have to eat much larger quantities of soy-based foods to get the proteins you need when compared to some of the other sources listed above. When preparing for bodybuilding events, Vince Gironda recommended eating up to three dozen eggs daily rather than using anabolic steroids!

The idea is that this gives your muscles a huge influx of biological protein so that they can reach new levels of strength and quickly repair any damage. After six to eight weeks, you should then reduce this amount to one or two per day, as you would have achieved your goal.

There are also bodybuilding diets which are focused on fresh vegetables and fruits, with red meats as the primary source of proteins. Every diet is designed for a different purpose, though they share the aim of giving the body the protein needed to build new muscle tissue after intensive workout sessions. However, these are not meant to be long term diets. Along with diet, Gironda recommended supplements including dessicated liver, wheat germ oil, kelp tablets, inositol, choline, betain, methionine (lipotropic amino acids which help the body to assimilate dietary protein). A special bodybuilding diet developed by Vince Gironda for students preparing for events was a cyclical diet to help them in losing even more subcutaneous fat.


This was composed of four days of zero carbohydrates, then on the fifth day eat normally. For the next four days eat zero carbs, and on the tenth day eat normally. The students would keep this up for between three and eight weeks, until every muscle separation and vein popped out on the surface.

Any good bodybuilding diet should consist of around 24% protein from high quality sources, 40% natural, unrefined carbohydrates (meaning no refined sugars or starches), ample fiber and a balanced amount of fats.

A diet for the period right before a competition consisting of the four day zero carb and one day of normal eating cycle is a good one, but should not be eaten for any more than eight weeks. Along with this diet, proper dietary supplements should be included.
