What Makes A Safari Experience In Botswana Unique?
Imagine flying on a small aircraft into the very heart of one of the worlds great wilderness areas
, a land where an abundance of wildlife roam free, untouched by modern civilisation, a true African adventure. This is Botswana; experience the stunning beauty and unimaginable vastness.
For some, Botswana is largely regarded as having some of the best wilderness and wildlife in Africa. Botswana has an astonishing thirty eight percent of its land being dedicated to wildlife management areas, safari parks and game reserves. The vast majority of the wildlife areas in Botswana are unfenced, which allows most of the animals to roam free, travelling the length and breadth of the country. When you first visit Botswana you will be blown away by the vast expanses of uninhabited wilderness, stretching from one horizon to the next, you truly get a unique sensation of unlimited space.
Chobe National Park is the second biggest safari park in Botswana and is the countries very first national park, the park covers a staggering ten thousand square kilometres. The largest national park in Botswana is the Central Kalahari Game reserve and covers approximately fifty two thousand square kilometres which is approximately twice the size of Massachusetts. It is the largest game reserve in the world, but is not a particularly popular safari destination for most travellers. This is because the climate and terrain are very harsh and unforgiving, which have kept the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in pristine. But those that do venture out to the worlds largest safari park are rewarded with untamed Africa at its very best.
The best time to go on safari to Botswana is during the dry season which is from May to November, this is also the best time to spot leopards as the weather is perfect and cool enough for them to hunt during the day time, which means that you will have more opportunities to spot these beautiful creatures. During September and October great heard of buffalo and elephant form at the watering holes and tend to congregate around the watering holes to cool down. November in Botswana is a great time to see wildlife as the rains have not quite arrived yet and the densities of the wildlife are extraordinarily high. For the avid birdwatchers the best time to visit Botswana is during the rainy season (December to March), this is because the vegetation is thicker and bird species are more prolific and this is also when the migratory birds are visiting Botswana, meaning the diversity of the birds in Botswana is huge.
Some say that Botswana can be a fairly expensive safari destination to visit due to the accessibility of some of the safari parks and attractions. I would advise looking into the time of year you wish to visit Botswana on safari, this in order for you to get the maximum return on your holiday and to avoid disappointment. Having said that, Botswana is unlike any other safari holiday destination, it truly is untamed which is why the prices are more than the other safari destinations.
