What Makes Flap Wheels So Useful?
When you've taken so much time and care to create a detailed profile for a special project
, it's important how to sand it properly. No matter how you made the profile, you want to make sure that it can be sanded with the detail kept intact.
In my experience the flap wheel head is the only method that works well for this purpose. Flap wheel heads were made to be flexible, meaning that they can conform to the shape that is being sanded. When you use a flap wheel head with a proper configuration, you'll see a number of things happen.
In Raw Wood Sanding
First, the process of flap wheel sanding will denibb your product. This is to remove the small fibers that pop up when sanded in any other way or when any type of chemical or water is applied to the surface of the material. These fibers if not removed will set in a raised position causing a rough primer or stain and seal coat. This will require additional sanding time being needed between coats to achieve a smooth top coat. Utilizing a flap wheel head will remove these fibers resulting in much less sanding time between coats. In some cases less finish materials will be required because there is less fiber to cover.
The second benefit is that flap wheel heads make sure that there is a uniform pore opening across the material. This means a uniform color balance across the surface.
Lastly, this method can soften the sharp edges very slightly. This helps by cutting down on areas that are impossible for paint, stain or sealer to adhere to. By creating a small radius around these parts, it can eliminate any weak areas in the finish. It will also, in turn, make sealer or primer sanding a lot less difficult, as it's much less likely you'll sand through the finish.
In Sealer or Primer Sanding
The first result is that there is a more uniform scuff of the primer or sealer coat, which makes sure that there is a good bond between this coat and the top coat.
Second, if the material was properly sanded in the raw, you should now be able to flap wheel sand the sealer or primer coat without burning through or white lining your product.
Third you will achieve a more uniform and overall higher quality finish.
Flap wheel sanding really is a fantastic way to cut down on the work required, to produce a higher quality and add value.
