What Materials Can't Go in a Skip?
Whilst the common perception might be that they are a container designed to take away any waste you have on site, there are often numerous guidelines attached by the hiring company as to what is and isn't allowed.
Generally speaking, a skip is only designed to take general waste. That could be rubble from a building project, cuttings from extensive gardening or old furniture and cabinets from a house clearance. Basically if you would throw it in your own bin, a skip will handle it.
The trouble occurs though when you have materials that could be defined as 'specialist waste'. These often include anything that is deemed hazardous or cannot be disposed of at a standard refuse site. So what might these be?
Asbestos
Whilst this isn't a material commonly used in most modern buildings, when gutting out older properties you can often discover asbestos deposits. Due to the potentially damaging nature of asbestos it requires specialist handling and certainly shouldn't be thrown in with general waste.
Solvents and Paint
Whether you've got a surplus of paint, glue, varnish or a cleaning agent, you need to find a proper way of disposing of it. There are numerous sites that are equipped to deal with such liquids and you should look to visit these rather than hoisting it in a skip.
Electricals
This is a difficult one, but government legislation stipulates that you can throw away televisions, computer displays and numerous other electrical items. This is all covered under the WEEE directive in the UK and other governments throughout the world have their own interpretation. However, when it comes to skip hire, most companies won't be willing to take any such equipment.
Kitchen Appliances
If you've got an old freezer then don't hoist it into a skip. These are another product that require specialist disposal and can lead to the hiring company refusing to collect the skip or including an additional charge to your overall bill.
Batteries
Particularly with larger vehicle batteries, specialist disposal methods need to be sought. As they contain some pretty dangerous chemicals and obviously aren't biodegradable, you can't consign it to landfill and therefore it won't be accepted by most skip hire companies either.
Tyres
Maybe you've got a surplus of old tyres on site and you want to get rid of them, well a skip isn't going to be the solution for you. Again, these won't decompose and contain harmful elements that can make them dangerous, particularly if incinerated. Old tyres can easily be recycled and there are a whole host of companies who will happily take them off your hands and use the rubber to create new models.
So as you can probably already tell, skip hire isn't perhaps as straightforward as you may have first thought. You have to be mindful of everything that you throw away and don't just assume that it can be taken away and disposed of on your behalf for free.
Some skip hire firms will even charge a levy for separating recyclable goods from your regular waste, so you can imagine that if they discover huge amounts of hazardous waste there will be a fair amount to pay as a consequence. As previously stated, some skip hire companies might even refuse to collect the waste if it does contain a number of products that it deems as dangerous or contravenes their codes.
The solution to this is to simply make sure that you are fully aware of the individual company's rules before you go ahead and hire a skip. If you are likely to have a few items that could be defined as 'hazardous' make sure that you seek alternative disposal methods. Many skip hire companies will be able to point you in the right direction if you consult them; they may even provide the service themselves.
Rules will differ from company to company, so just be aware that some will be more accepting of other forms of waste than others. If you're concerned, just make sure you discuss it with them first and look at ways to avoid issues for your skip hire.
