What Movie Consumers Want
You hear a lot these days from the movie industry about pirates
. And I am not talking about Johnny Depp wearing eye shadow. The kind of pirates they speak of are thirteen year old girls, college students, and tech savvy adults. They are speaking about the people who download or stream the content that they own without paying for it. Media piracy is a rampant problem, but why is it so widespread. Are people unwilling to pay for media? Do they just not care about all the money and hard work that goes into making these wonderful movies and TV shows? That is what the industry thinks, and they spend millions of lobbying dollars in congress every year to gain more and more political power so they can create laws that harshly punish those who would watch their content for free. But is free content what the consumers want, or is it something else.
Pay and Pay Again
Let us look at it from a consumers perspective. They pay ten or more dollars to see a film in the theater. Not too bad, they get to see it on the big screen, in an audience full of fans, and at a time when the movie has recently been released. Then a few months down the road the movie is released on pay per view. The consumer pays six or seven dollars to watch it on their TV from home. Then the movie comes out for rent in rental shops for four or five dollars again. Then in another month, the movie comes to Redbox and rents for around a dollar and a half. That is four different ways for the consumer to see the movie at different places and different times. They could spend all this money and they still do not own the movie yet. Why should movie companies be able to charge for the same content to the same person over and over again. You would not pay for anything else in this manner.
Inconvenience
Recently, movie and TV studios have begun to offer content online in various places. You can view some content here at this website, and some at this. You can pay a bit extra here and see this but not that. You can watch HBO online, but only if you have a paid subscription with a cable or satellite provider. Some content is only available temporarily and then it goes away.It is this inconvenicence that turns consumers off and turns them on to downloads and illegal streaming. This lets them watch what they want, when they want and they own it forever.
What they want
Movie consumers want one website where they can download, rent, or stream every single TV show, or movie available for rent or sale. They want to be able to pay to own the content without having to watch ads. They are willing to watch ad supported content if it is recent and high quality. They want either a pay per item or a one monthly subscription with a single company. They want to be able to copy the shows they have purchased onto any and all devices they own without restriction.
