A dentist must not only know how to perform the procedure effectively and why it needs to be performed, but he must also be able to explain it in terms that his patient can easily understand. If the patient has a few options from which to choose, the dental professional must know how to present the pros and cons of each option so the patient can make an informed decision.

Gentle, yet strong hands are required for much dental work. A dentist's fingers must be able to work for several hours on end without getting tired and slipping. Each slip may cause extra pain to the patient, making them nervous to ever have dental work done again! However, a professional with strong, gentle, and steady hands will instill a sense of confidence into his patient and help him relax through the procedure.

The hygienist must be confident that his observations were understood, and the patient needs to clearly understand any extra procedures that may need to be done. Patients trust dentists who don't recommend extra work which isn't really necessary.
