I have been online since the days of dialup connection to the internet and during

that time I have seen nearly everything there is to see when it comes to making money online and I have also seen what common sense and experience tells me does not work, yet I still see people getting sucked into the trap of getting involved with the wrong program or doing the wrong things. In this article I am going to explain what things work and some of the things to avoid when it comes to making money on the internet, as well as why so many people are failing.

Avoid the Get Rich Quick Trap

To my mind this is something of a phenomenon about online business and the perception many people have of it. I think a lot of it stems back to the technology boom and those dot-com millionaires that were made seemingly overnight. What people fail to realise about that time is that the madness of crowds was in full force and the stock market was so bullish that tons of people were making a fortune until the crash. I did a programming course with one of those guys that went on to make millions during that exceptional period in the late nineties.

In a bricks and mortar business people accept that they must work hard, have the right logistics in place and focus on their bottom line profits if they want to survive. In an online business, people quickly buy into the 'get rich quick' mentality and to be honest it's not entirely their fault, because the marketers in the industry create products that satisfy this demand for 'push button' riches. Let me tell you right here and now that if you think you can push a couple of buttons and watch money simply pour into your bank account, you are deluding yourself. If it was that simple, the creator of the software would not be selling it in the first place.

Focus On What Works

If you heed this advice, I have just saved you a lot of time and expense. Now I appreciate this sounds obvious, but instead of trying to guess what to do in order to make money online, you need to see with your own eyes what is already working in the marketplace.

How to do that? It's really quite simple if you analyze those out there that have already achieved what you aspire to achieve yourself. So in the case of making money on the internet, look at the people that are making money, which of those are truly successful and break down what they are doing. It's important that I make the distinction between what they say and what they do as they are not always both the same thing. If you bottom-line what a person is doing, you will reach the real conclusion as to how they are generating an income online.

Your Road Map to Success

I realize that if I don't tell you what works, you may stop reading there and do nothing, so here are two things that do make money online.

1) Find a starving crowd that are looking for a solution to a problem. Once you have identified this crowd, create a product that you can sell to them. This product can be an ebook, audio training, video training, a membership site or even personal coaching. The key thing here is to align yourself with a niche market that are willing to spend money if they are presented with the right product for their needs.

2) Find quality products that you would be happy to buy yourself and are already selling online. Become an affiliate for these products and learn how to market them effectively so you can earn commissions on referrals that lead to sales.

The first step can seem daunting when you are new to online business as it involves creating your own product from scratch. If you are a beginner to making money online, you can begin by selling other merchants products as an affiliate. Once you begin to enjoy some success from affiliate marketing, you can also then start creating your own product. You really can make an income online if you are willing to put in the work and avoid getting distracted by software and solutions that promise overnight riches.
