What Role Should The Government Be Playing In Health Care

Protect Your Vitality By Refreshing Your Health Habits by Michael D. Hume, M.S. What role should the government be playing in health care? The answer depends upon your ideologic view toward the government in general... what role should the government be playing in ANY aspect of our day-to-day lives? On the Left, the general belief is that government should play a heavy role in health care. All members of society, they argue, should have access to exactly the same level of medical care, regardless of achievement or station. To assure this outcome, the government must control health care. This philosophy gave rise to such nationalized medical programs as collectivist health care in the old Soviet Union and communist China, the National Institute of Health in the United Kingdom, and "Obamacare" in the United States. The Left points to abuses by private insurers and doctors as support for their basic preference for heavy state control of health care. Folks on the Right have a very different belief. To them, government should keep its hands off the medical industry, and free-market solutions should prevail. They point to the failures of collectivist medicine (wherever its been tried) as support for the notion that less is more in terms of government takeover of medical care. If left unfettered, they argue, the free market would generate the most high-quality medical care for the highest percentage of the population. Before last year's "Obamacare" legislation, America's health care system needed help. Abuses were evident everywhere from insurers to providers. But I tend to side with the Right here... the less the government intervenes in something like health care, the better things are. Instead of government takeover, what the health care industry really needed was reduced regulation; if people were free to buy health insurance across state lines, for instance, the free market incentives which make capitalism so powerful would give rise to vendors whose market niche is precisely to compete with low- or poor-service providers. Without those incentives (which disappear under collectivist control), everyone gets the same health care, sure... but it's the same low-quality health care replete with impossible surgical waiting lists and poor, low-cost solutions to which there are no alternatives. The collectivists have grabbed control in virtually every society on the planet, though, so until things change, we're left with a general downward slide toward state medicine. Look for a brain drain (meaning, a shortage of well-prepared doctors), a slow-to-stagnant effort in pharmaceutical research and development, lines so long for surgery that patients die while waiting, and a general shortage of quality medical care. To protect yourself, take personal responsibility for renewing your daily health habits. The five most important are the ones I call "The NEWSS" - Nutrition (start by eliminating processed garbage from your diet), Exercise (get your heart rate up at least three times a week), Water (drink two liters every day), Sleep (get your eight hours), and Supplements (take at least one good multi-vitamin every day). The government is geared to take as much control of your health care as it can, even though your care will be better the less government intervenes. So don't rely on government health care. Take personal responsibility for your own vitality, and reduce your dependence on the government's role in medical care. Your discipline in your own daily health habits is the most important factor (by far) in the future of your own personal vitality.
