What Science Says About Islam's Alcohol Prohibition

Alcohol is mentioned numerous times in the Quran, though to be pedantic, it is generally referred to via intoxicating substances available at the time of the Quran's writing. For example, 4:43 states that Muslims are banned from praying while intoxicated, but the word for intoxicated is sukara, which is derived from sugar and means drunk or intoxicated.

I am here not to discuss the positive side of alcohol consuming, since i believe most of the readers already knows better than i do (i only knows the fact that recent evidence has revealed that drinking red wine can help to increase the HDL, which is the good cholesterol. Drinking alcohol also has the benefit of making us relax and in social situations people who are shy can feel more confidence and less nervous), but allow me to inform you the negative effects.

For The Brain

How often a person drinks, when they first began drinking, their gender and size and whether there is a family history of alcohol will all determine what the effects will be.

Heavy drinking is one of the causes of Alcohol Related Brain Injury (ARBI). Alcohol can cause short-term memory loss, dehydration and can lead to falls and accidents. Alcohol can also increase the risk of seizures.

Alcohol abuse can also lead to traumatic brain injuries because someone who is drinking may still drive without making reasonable judgments and may take more risks than a sober person would. Their chance of falling is increased as is the potential of getting into verbal altercations or fisticuffs. Alcoholics tend to have more head injuries; there is a high rate of alcohol abuse before TBI.

Those who continue to use alcohol after a traumatic brain injury have more difficulty with thinking abilities, cognitive function and memory problems. Cells are lost after these types of injuries and other cells will have to work that much harder. If those cells are affected by alcohol, it makes it more difficult for them to work. Alcohol heightens the degree of cognitive difficulties already being experienced.

People who use alcohol after a brain injury don't recover as quickly or as completely and in fact, can lose much of the progress they have made. They will lose what skills they had previously that they could possibly have regained.

For people who have alcohol related brain injury or have suffered a TBI, because of their impaired insight they do not realize that their substance abuse is a problem. These difficulties are exacerbated for counselors working with survivors and those with ARBI because when those with brain injuries report on their use of alcohol the figures are usually inaccurate because of their memory deficits.

For those who have brain injuries, the affects of alcohol will be more quickly apparent. After only two beers, my partner will have problems with speech and attitude and after only one glass of rye, (particularly the way he likes to pour them), he is slurring his words and having difficulty walking. Before his injury, although he drank several glasses every day, I saw no outward signs of inebriation.

These signs become readily apparent because of alcohol's effect on the brain. The only conclusion possible, therefore, is that alcohol is bad for the brain.

For Your Body

Drinking too much alcohol can have many negative health implications on the body. There are immediate side effects and there are long term side effects. The immediate side effects are impaired vision, slurred speech, and loss of co-ordination. Alcohol can also make you fat as it contains lots of calories. It also affects the brain by killing the brain cells. Long term effects of drinking can affect the liver. This vital organs role is to remove toxins from the body. Alcohol is actually a poison and during the process of the liver processing it a substance called acetaldehyde is produced. This by product is very toxic to the body. Over time the consumption of alcohol can lead to liver disease or as it is known cirrhosis of the liver.

For Pregnant Woman

Consuming alcohol which includes beer, wine, hard liquor and wine coolers, during your pregnancy are definitely not a cool thing to do. It is very dangerous not only to the pregnant mother but also to the baby. Babies who are born to mothers who like to drink alcohol may be having health problems such as the fetal alcohol syndrome which is a group of problems especially to new born babies to mothers who is an alcoholic even during her pregnancy period.

Babies who contracted the fetal alcohol syndrome are usually small in size and also underweight. Besides that, they often have birth defects when they are older they may be having behaviour problems, for example mental retardation. In the United States alone, there are about 1,200 babies are born every year with this type of syndrome.

The Quran states that alcohol contains both good and evil, but that the evil outweighs the good. A positive aspect of alcohol is that it can lead to a removal of personal insecurities, which can help people to become more outgoing and enjoy themselves more in social situations. However, if they consume too much it can lead to problems that are already listed above.

While it is unlikely that this article will stop anyone from drinking alcohol, I hope that it helps to explain some of the problems that it can cause, and encourages alcoholics to limit their consumption in the future.
