What Should I Expect From Local Campgrounds?
This last summer was sunny, beautiful, and warm--prime conditions for participating in outdoor activities like boating, hiking, fishing, and camping
. But when my spouse and I spent our first weekend in a tent surrounded by forest for the season, I had to become accustomed to the regulations and accommodations featured in the state to which we have moved.
If you're planning on roughin' it soon, then you'll need to know what to expect, too. Let me acquaint you with some common details you will want to know before striking out into the wilderness.
First, I'll speak to the ladies. Many of us like our comforts, and having restroom facilities close by can be important. A quick search on the internet can turn up a map of the area, which will likely indicate designated camping spots and any facilities that exist nearby.
If you are planning on hiking into your campground, you probably won't have the same luck. In that case, you just want to be sure you can find enough privacy, which will be hard to come by over favorite getaway weekends like Labor Day.
Some regions have strict directions regarding campfires, particularly if drought has affected local plant life and therefore raises wildfire risk. That's why most public campsites provide fire pits, like my favorite campgrounds in Alberta, but it's up to you to ensure that no flyaway sparks or smoldering embers pose any threat to the wilderness around you.
Make sure you have ample water on hand whenever you camp, whether it's through a nearby lake or river or distilled gallons from the store. Many public grounds have a tap, but don't count on it.
Camping can get boring if all you intend to do is sit in your tent and roast marshmallows at night. Find out about regional trails for hiking or investigate other favorite outdoor activities, like volleyball, target shooting, and more. Thunder Lake in Alberta is one of my favorite camping spots, as its scenic views are nothing short of breathtaking, the weather is perfect, and, perhaps best of all, it features some of the best Alberta boating I have ever experienced.
The best campgrounds get snatched up quickly during summer weekends, however, so find out if reservations are available or if your area exclusively offers "first come, first served" spots. In some areas, making a reservation can be expensive, but it depends on if the land is owned by the state or the National Forest Service. Do your research to find out about the regulations if you have a specific camping spot in mind.
