What Should Traditional Russian Brides Know?

Traditional Russian weddings are much different from what we are used to in the United States

. Rehearsals, flower girls, and wedding planners aren't required for this special kind of ceremony. Even so, if you're planning to be one of the traditional Russian brides you're sure to have a magical day. Here are few things you should expect.

In a Russian wedding the titles of best man and maid of honor are changed slightly. Instead these people are called witnesses, or "svideteli". The celebration of a marital joining frequently lasts for at least two days but can go on for longer.

One thing that remains the same is prep time. Preparation for a traditional Russian marriage can run anywhere from one month to six months. The registration happens in a public place. For Americans it is usually a courthouse. In Russia they call these departments of public service "Zags".

A bride who is seeking a traditional Russian wedding should look forward to gifts of bread and salt. These edible blessings come from both parents. They are considered to be a symbol of health, prosperity, and longevity.

When given these edible gifts the bride and groom both take a bite. This is again a tradition that is somewhat kept in weddings in the United States, except instead of fresh baked bread we use cake. Whoever takes the largest bite of this piece is supposed to be the head of the family.

Another custom that we have in the States that is also used in the traditional Russian weddings is toasts. Toasts are where a friend or relative stands up and says something about the newly formed couple. After that a drink is shared by the entire room as a sort of well wishing.

In Russian tradition once a toast is made the glasses are thrown on the floor. If the glasses break when they hit the ground it is believed to be good luck. However, if the shards draw blood this may be considered a bad omen, so, just like in marriage you have to know when to put force, how much, and you have to take careful aim before you toss anything!

One of the most interesting customs in a traditional Russian wedding is known as Krazha Nevesty. This means "stealing the bride" and it is exactly as it sounds. That's right; if the groom fails to watch his bride closely he may just end up without a wife.

The groom will have to keep a sharp eye out during his wedding celebrations. Friends and family members will more than likely try to set up lavish plans in order to steal his bride. If she's stolen he will have to pay a ransom to get her back.

Being one of these Russian brides can be just as nerve wrecking as being any other kind of bride. There are tons of things you have to remember, all the while taking one of the biggest steps towards your future. Still, it's important to remember that on your wedding day you're supposed to be happy. Smile, you're getting married!
