Six Sigma is a complete and flexible system that can be used to precise goals, measure them and achieve them consistently. There are five main reasons this approach is becoming increasingly popular with more companies seeking to get six sigma certification. The reasons center around the DMAIC framework.
DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control. These are the five fundamentals that organization heads are finding make six sigma so practical and beneficial in setting standards. It also works in setting standards for how things are done and upholding the quality of the end product to maximize gain and minimize wastage and deviation from set goals.
The first fundamental is Define. It involves setting very precise goals for every process undertaken to come up with the final product. The goals may be external such as increasing customer loyalty to increase market share and it may also be external such as boosting employee morale for better job performance.
The next one is Measure where current systems and methods of operation are analyzed using different measuring techniques to detect flaws and the good points of a system. Precise metrics have to be used to measure. For example, in a manufacturing concern, employee efficiency can be measured by the number of products that are finished, packaged and delivered in a day, week or month.
Another reason lean consulting is so efficient is the third fundamental of the DMAIC framework which is Analyze. This step comes after measuring has been done to see whether the different parts of the process are leading to the attaining of goals set for a day or other specified period. Analysis is crucial for determining whether there are any deviations or shortfalls from the set goals.
Various statistical tools are used for analysis. For instance, it may be found through measuring that there is a shortfall in products finished in a day or month. It may also be that there is a shortfall in delivery of finished products which would mean the financial goals of sales or cash flow are also affected.
The next step seeks to rectify what is causing shortfalls. This is the fourth fundamental which is the Improve step. It aims to understand and eliminate or correct the factors causing wastage or delays. This can be from any part of the production process.
The last step is concerned with Control. It puts in place control measures throughout the system to eliminate wastage of resources including raw materials, machinery and manpower. It aims to ensure procedures are followed as they have been adjusted after the first four steps have been completed.
The depth and practicality of these fundamentals and getting
six sigma certification is something more and more companies are appreciating. It is the reason why this is becoming an increasingly popular approach in all kinds of organizations.
