One of the first things that you are going to have to have as a skill, when you are in school and when you graduate, is a love of research. Those who are in the field are going to spend a large amount of time researching a variety of things. In the field of forensic psychology, you have to realize that you are going to be researching more than just the psychological matters of the case. You will also need to research the law, and how various mental health issues apply to the law. Knowing how to research properly, and how to get all of the information you need for the case as quickly as possible is going to be an asset that you want to possess.

Forensic psychologists also need to have excellent critical thinking skills. This is something that some people just have instinctually, but its something that one can practice as well. You need to be able to look at facts, evidence, theories, and more, and apply scientific psychological principles to them. One needs to have the ability to remove emotion from his or her work, and look at the facts. This can be difficult for some people because of the nature of the work. Working within the criminal justice system its quite likely that you are going to see and learn about horrific acts and crimes. You cant let that emotion trump your ability to work the evidence and to adhere to psychological fact.

A psychologist working in any area is also going to need to have good communication skills in order to succeed. Written and verbal communication skills are important. Forensic psychologists will often have to testify in court, and it is important that the psychologist is comfortable in those types of situations otherwise it could jeopardize the outcome of a case.
