What Sorts Of Jobs Are Available In The Field Of Psychiatry?

As many as one in four people may suffer from some sort of mental health problem over the course of the year

. According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, this ranks mental illness alongside heart problems and cancer as one of the nation"s biggest health problems.

Psychiatric specialties

When doctors are training to become psychiatrists they choose a specialist area to study. The types of psychiatry jobs available may depend to a large extent on which area they chose. The main specialties and some of the options they open up include:

General adult psychiatry

This can lead to psychiatry jobs in a wide range of situations, working with adults of working age who may be suffering from various mental health issues.

Old age psychiatry

This involves working with people over the age of 65. Older people can suffer from the same range of mental health issues as the rest of the population but psychiatrists working in this field may also be involved with the assessment and treatment of dementia.

Child and adolescent psychiatry

Psychiatry jobs in this field may be concerned with assessing and treating emotional and behavioural problems in children and young people up to school leaving age.

Psychotherapy

This involves treatment that favours 'talking treatments' over medication.

Forensic psychiatry

This covers the relationship between psychiatry and the law and may involve assessing and treating people who have committed crimes whilst mentally ill.

Learning disability psychiatry

Psychiatrists working in this area are generally involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems occurring in people with learning disabilities.

Psychiatrists work in a number of different places including hospitals, residential centres for older people and people with special needs, and even in prisons. There are also a further number of subspecialties available.

These include liaison psychiatry, which provides mental health treatment for patients in regular hospitals. This may involve assessing a patient with self-harm issues or treating patients whose mental health may be affected by long-term illness or serious injury. Perinatal psychiatry is concerned with the mental health of women during pregnancy or in the period following the birth of a child.

Psychiatry in the armed forces

Psychiatrists can be recruited into The Royal Navy, The Army and the Royal Air Force to serve as military psychiatrists. They have usually trained as general adult psychiatrists but may also dual-train in a specialist area that may be of use in the military such as liaison or forensic psychiatry. Military psychiatrists may have a special interest in the study of combat stress or the effects of mental health on fitness and morale. All doctors in the armed forces enlist as military personnel and will undergo some general military training. There may also be psychiatry jobs available for civilian psychiatrists to work alongside their military colleagues. In these cases, civilian psychiatrists may help to treat military personnel but will not have an operational role.
