What Special Care Does The Persian Breed Require?

The Persian: a breed of feline infrequently recognized by ordinary pet owners for its name

, but often known on sight. This longhaired type isn't usually distinguished by its temperament or its luxurious coat; instead, Average Joe is bound to take notice of its flat face. The word "ugly" is, unfortunately, a choice descriptor for this cat, but to many cat lovers, its appearance is endearing.

How do I know so much? A friend of my mother's bred these kitties, so many of our adoptees came from her. I learned over the years that this loving and loyal breed requires a special brand of care.

Like any longhaired cats, Persians need daily brushing and professional grooming at regular intervals. It would be wise to trust this grooming to a facility that also provides boarding for animals so that you and your cat establish a rapport with staff members that may also be responsible for the care of your feline companion if you go on vacation.

I suggest this because I know from experience that Persians are often on the shy side, so building trust is important for their comfort and safety. A Houston dog boarding facility has been my number one place to bring my cats for their grooming and my boarding needs.

Sadly, but not surprisingly, the facial structure of the Persian makes the breed prone to breathing and eye problems. Respiration can be labored, and malformed tear ducts generally cause an excess of "weeping," which is simply a cosmetic issue causing an excess of tears to escape.

However, more serious infections can occur in the eyes, urinary tract, and skin, so make sure that your kitty has regular checkups with the vet to detect these or any other common ailments associated with the Persian. PKD--Polycystic Kidney Disease--is known to occur at a higher rate in Persians than other cats, so make sure to watch for symptoms of excessive drinking and urination, reduced appetite, and weight loss in your Persian.

If you hope to breed your Persian, do not do so without extensive research and an experienced mentor. The anatomy of the Persian affects its ability to give birth to live, healthy offspring, and some estimate the kitten mortality rate among Persians to be as high as 30 percent.

To avoid high instances of PKD among your kittens, you need to screen all breeding males and females and remove carriers from the pool. If you do not intend to show your cats or their offspring, you may want to purposefully elongate the muzzle to reduce breathing troubles.

The Persian is a very special breed--one that is near and dear to my heart. They make affectionate companions, and if you are up to the challenge of their care, you certainly won't regret it.
