What Steps To Take After Your Child Fails A Hearing Test

You might think that when your child fails his or her hearing test that this is unusual

. There are many children who are impaired in this way. That may be one of the reasons that some states require newborn screening for this. If your child has gone to an audiologist for testing and has failed, do not despair. One of the most important things to remember as a parent is that you are your child's advocate.

After getting bad news, you will want to sit in the corner and cry perhaps, but rather than do this, it is important to take action. You should ask the audiologist if he or she thinks a second opinion would be helpful if the results where not conclusive. The audiologist may tell you that it would be a good idea to go this route.

If you get a second opinion through the use of another hearing test and your find that your child is unable to hear well, then you will need to take the next steps. You will need to speak to someone about your child's options. Hearing aids or cochlear implants are probably your two main options. You probably will not want to go with cochlear implants until your child is a toddler, and even then it might not be suggested for your child's issues. This will take counsel from your doctor to know the right path to take.

Once you get settled into the process of figuring out treatment, you may have some other questions that you need to have answered. You should try to discover what has caused your child's impairment. A hearing test cannot tell you everything. If it shows that your child's problem is auditory nerve related, then it could mean that there is an issue in that region of the brainstem. If your child had other facial nerve problems, this is likely the case. You might suggest at this point that an MRI be done to see what is going on in the area.

The reason it is important to look into causes is because there are some association syndromes that can cause an inability to hear. If you find that your child has a few of the associated illnesses that go with a particular syndrome, it is a good idea to get other areas that area associated checked out. Other systemic issues could involve the kidneys or heart.

These two areas should be considered if there is a question. A geneticist may be able to help you to get the blood tests you need for a genetic diagnosis. They can be expensive, so make sure that they are covered on insurance before having them done. It is possible to go forward without them, but a certain diagnosis is helpful.

You might feel like one hearing test has opened a whole can of worms. That may be the case, but that can of worms may end up saving your child's life if you discover an underlying condition.
