However, such items will wear over time, exposing the darkened nickel silver underneath.

The next thing to consider is the length of the chain. When deciding this, think about which clothes you will wear with the chain, and how low you would like the chain to hang. Perhaps use a piece of string or wool to determine the right length for you. You can usually buy 18-inch, 20-inch, 22-inch or 24-inch silver chains over the counter, but any reputable jeweller should be able to create one of your desired length, whatever it may be.

You will now need to think about the look of the chain you wish to buy. If you are intending to use it to display a pendant, then you need to make sure that it is in keeping with the item. For instance, a delicate charm, maybe a rabbits foot or small locket, may be best suited to a delicate chain. Alternatively a larger pendant, perhaps a Maltese Cross, may work better with a heavier chain. When purchasing a chain to go with a pendant, remember that it is the pendant that is principally on display, and that the chain must not overshadow from it.

A chunky mens silver chain makes a superb gift, and is a very stylish item. Often they are bought in conjunction with a bracelet of similar design. Dont forget that items like this can often receive knocks when used frequently, so it is advisable to buy something that is made of good quality sterling silver, rather than an alloy or plated metal that will wear quickly and look tarnished.

Many high street jewellers have stocks of chains, but their range will always be limited because they will be tied to a single supplier, and because of space limitations. Nowadays it is much easier to buy chains online, where you can compare the various items available from many different shops, and choose the ones that are right for you. You are also more likely to find a good bargain, and you could well find yourself with a silver chain at a fraction of the price you would otherwise have paid.
