Those who have this disease may be unaware that they are suffering with the disease, but they may also have certain typical symptoms including being extremely thirsty and the need to urinate often. The reason these two things occurs is because there is an increased amount of sugar in the blood. It needs some type of dilution.

To find out if they have diabetes, one should go to the doctor. They will do tests to find out the blood sugar levels are. Sometimes, people have the diagnosis made by accident when they have their blood tests done for something else.

There are different ways one can diagnose this disease. Since a patient will many complain of the symptoms of being thirsty and frequent urination. If they state this during the interview, then a blood test can be done. The result would then need to be 200 mg per dL to be regarded as diabetes. There is another way to diagnose this, and that would be to do the test fasting. The person would not eat for eight hours prior, and when they do the blood test, the measurement should be 126 mg per dL.

The best thing to do is keep blood sugar levels low because this disease has many different effects on the body which can be devastating. The first thing one needs to keep in mind is the effects it has short-term. If one does not control their blood sugars, their sugars can become very high. There are separate serious conditions for those with Type I or Type II which can become very emergent conditions. However, long-term, there are other things that one can suffer from such as problems with eyesight, kidney function, and numbness in the leg and feet.

If blood sugars cannot be controlled with diet alone, it is time to start medications taken by mouth. There are several different types of these medications. The doctor can let one know which is the best to start with.

The next type of medication that one might need treatment with if oral medications is not enough is insulin. This medication is an injected medication, and it is the primary treatment for Type I diabetes. Insulin helps bring down glucose levels quickly.

People who have increased thirst and urination need to consult a doctor. This might be a sign of diabetes, and blood tests will be done to diagnose the disease. If a diagnosis is made, all details regarding the disease will be mentioned including the severe effects it can have on the body like the kidney and lower legs.
