What They Don't Tell You About Skin Care Cream: Why You Need to Read the Label by:Tasha Sanders
By the time you finish reading this, I guarantee you won't be able to look at most skin care cream products the same way again!
All of us, both male and female, want to keep looking our best throughout our whole lives. So we spend money--sometimes quite a lot of money--on top-selling brand names that promise to make us look younger and keep those dreaded wrinkles at bay.
Yet increasingly, we consumers are growing tired of the amount we spend on skin care moisturizer creams and lotions that just don't do the job we expected. And worse, we're starting to worry that some of the ingredients in these products may not be the best thing to put on our faces.
First, some quick facts about your skin.
It is one of the largest organs of your body and it protects your body against pathogens (disease-causing agents such as viruses, microorganisms and toxins) and water loss. It also insulates, regulates temperature and synthesises vitamin D (essential for the healthy functioning of internal organs like the liver and kidneys and the immune system).
It follows that such an important part of your body needs the best care you can give it, not only because healthy skin helps to maintain a healthy body but because our faces are what we present to the world and we want the world to see us at our best.
So why do so many top-selling brands of expensive skin care cream include ingredients that can damage harm your overall health as well as your face?
The ingredients I'm talking about are harmful chemicals. Some of these are so harmful that some studies have suggested they may cause cancer, particularly breast cancer.
What are these harmful chemicals? Well, there are a surprisingly large number of them so I'll just talk about two here.
DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (monoethanolamine) and TEA (triethanolamine) are often used to adjust the pH of a product. Their use is restricted in Europe because of known carcinogenic effects. So do please avoid these chemicals if you can and read the label thoroughly. Yes, I know those names are horribly long but just remember the simple three-letter code when you're looking at a cosmetic jar label.
Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl paraben) are widely used as preservatives. Some studies have suggested that they may cause cancer and may interfere with the body's endocrine system.
Why do manufacturers include these substances? Well, for the most part they are quite cheap and easily available. Deliberately avoiding their use takes more time and money, and most manufacturers would prefer to take the easy route to a profit!
How can you avoid harmful chemicals in skin care?
The best way to avoid harmful substances in your moisturizers is to shop for a natural product that contains only high-quality, pure ingredients and that has been laboratory-tested to prove its safety.
Make no mistake about it, it's a cut-throat world in the skin care cream industry, with many manufacturers making claims about how 'natural' their brands are. But now that you have learned some of the tricks of the trade, you'll be able to make better informed decisions about what to buy for your face.
