What To Bring With You On Your Air Ambulance Flight
Once a patient has arranged a MedFlight911 air ambulance flight
, they often have questions about what they should bring with them for the trip. To help you out, we've put together the following list of some of the items you might want to think about bringing with you during an air ambulance journey:
Your carry-on bag.Space on an air ambulance is limited, so we suggest that each passenger bring only one carry-on bag (the bag should be no larger than 22"x14"x9 (a typical carry-on size). The amount of luggage that will fit depends of course on the type and size of the airplane, as well as whether there are any passengers accompanying the patient (and how many), and on the number of medical personnel and equipment required to meet the needs of the patient, given his or her condition.
If you have luggage that you need to transport that will not fit on the airplane, we can work with you to find a cost-effective shipping option. (You'll be responsible for the cost of shipping additional luggage.) Discuss your luggage needs with your MedFlight911 transport specialist so he or she can assist you with your luggage options.
Reading material. If you're accompanying a family member on a long air ambulance flight, you may want to bring books or magazines to read yourself or read to the patient.
Electronic devices. Generally, electronic devices (such as digital cameras, iPods, cell phones, computers and DVD players) can be used during the flight. However, we do ask that you check with the flight crew before using any electronic devices in flight.
Pets. We understand that our patients or their family members may be more comfortable if they can travel with their pet. While we can't guarantee you'll be able to bring your pet, we'll do our best to accommodate your desire to travel with your pet (please contact us in advance with your request). If your pet is authorized to travel, it must be current on vaccinations and travel in an approved pet carrier. Your pet won't be allowed out of the carrier during the flight.
Passport or other travel documents. If you're traveling to or from an international destination, the patient and each accompanying passenger will need to bring their passport and any other necessary travel documents.
Medications for passengers. Of course we will bring all of the proper medication and medical equipment necessary to care for the patient during the air ambulance transport. But sometimes, accompanying passengers may have conditions for which they're taking medication. Don't forget to pack any medication you might need during flight. We also ask that you mention any health conditions you have to the MedFlight911 air ambulance crew, just in case you need medical attention during the flight.
Comfortable clothing. The temperature on the aircraft can fluctuate. The flight crew will ensure the patient's temperature comfort throughout the transport process by adding or removing blankets. We suggest that accompanying passengers wear layers so you are comfortable during the flight. (Of course, please notify the flight crew if you need the temperature adjusted.)
There are also a few items you don't need to bring, including:
Drinks and snacks. These will be provided during transit. On long flights, you may be served a meal.
Extra luggage. Air ambulances aren't equipped to transport lots of luggage. We ask that you limit your baggage to a single carry-on item.
Patient-owned oxygen cylinder. Only FAA approved and secured oxygen cylinders can be brought on board the airplane; we will bring oxygen and any other medical equipment necessary.
Our goal is to make the air medical transport process and smooth and stress-free as possible. If you have any questions about what you can bring with you on your flight, just ask. We're here to help!
