What To Choose: Recessed Downlights Or Spotlights?

Spotlights plus recessed downlights form a popular option of lighting for many consumers

. These can be elegantly added to any room to change its environments dramatically. Both these forms of lighting arrangements have their respective features that are summed here to enable you to decide which would most suit your requirements.

Spotlights

Spotlights project out of the ceiling to deliver adaptable focused light. The benefit of this lighting arrangement is that you can rotate their head to any desired angle for the purpose of highlighting any part of room. Thus they are ideally suited for locations which need specifically detailed attention as in case of kitchens, workshops or highlighting a piece of art on one of the walls. Whether fixed on walls or ceilings, they remain a good source of effective lighting. You get these fixtures with multiple light fittings varying from one to four in number. They come in a large range of colors and designs to suit the environments of any room. The present day market offers a large range of energy saving light bulbs for spotlights. You may use CFLs, halogen or LED lights. The most frequently used bulbs with such fittings include GU10, R50 and R63 reflector lamps that provide very efficient lighting.

Downlights

A downlight factually refers to any kind of light fitting that throws light downwards. Recessed downlights or downlighters, also called recessed spotlights get incorporated in the ceiling, without affecting the effective height of the room wherein these are installed. So, they are most suited for rooms having low ceilings. Such lights are quite popular and provide efficient lighting in modern homes. These are most often installed in bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, sitting rooms or dining rooms. They are usually connected to the circular halogen fittings recessed into the ceilings of clubs, pubs, and hotels. You get these lights in a variety of design and shapes and rim colors. Drop glass rims are modified version of such lights. Though these can be adjusted to get more focused light on any part of the room, these cant be adjusted or tilted to the same extent as that of a swivel spotlight.

More Options

The most frequently used bulbs with such fittings are GU10 for main voltage and GU5.3 and MR16 for low voltage. MR16 lamps of low voltage are more suited for recessed lighting as their transformers get conveniently concealed and these deliver brighter light than halogen GU10 working on the mains. You also get downlighters for specific applications like fire rated version and IP 65 model, a moisture rated version for use in bathrooms and showers. For commercial use, you can have large PL downlights conforming to part L of rules for energy use.
