What To Consider When Buying Cheap Used Cars For Sale
Used car dealers normally tend to cluster in a specific area
. You will drive down a certain street in your town or city, and you will see tens or even hundreds of 'cheap used cars for sale' signs. We all know that buying a used car can be a bargain, but it also carries certain risks. What should you look out for when buying one?
Your first step should be a close inspection of the car's interior and its bodywork. Should the seats be dirty and torn, the dashboard cracked, the paintwork looks like it never enjoyed a decent wash and the engine covered with oil, stay far away. If the owner neglected the vehicle in such a way, it's very likely that the neglect will also be visible in the mechanical condition of the car. Also steer away from a car that shows signs of rust.
Secondly you should ensure that the service manual of the car is available. Inspect it closely as well. If the car has been serviced on a regular basis by a legitimate service station you have a much higher chance of buying a vehicle without major hidden problems than otherwise.
You do not need to be a mechanic to test a car for certain common flaws and to make sure that you won't be facing major repair bills within the foreseeable future. Simply take the car for a test drive. Switch off the radio and listen carefully if there are funny noises coming from the gearbox. When you change gears there should be no scratching sounds and in an automatic vehicle the engine should not rev up after such a gear change.
Next park the car somewhere in a parking lot or simply stop on the side of the road. Then rev up the engine a few times. Repeat this a couple of times while you keep your eyes on the rear-view mirror. If there are any signs of excessive smoke coming from the exhaust pipe, the engine is probably worn and needs to be overhauled.
While you are driving the vehicle, also listen closely for any strange noises that might be coming from the back of the car. If you hear a humming sound from the back, it probably indicates that the differential is not working properly any more.
If the vehicle is a front-wheel drive, stop in an open space. Turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and reverse the vehicle. A clapping sound from the direction of the front wheels usually indicates faulty CV joints.
Lastly, when it comes to cheap used cars for sale, don't start yourself blind at the age of the vehicle. With used cars, the condition is much more important than the age. A well-maintained car that's twenty years old will be a much better bargain than a neglected one that's two years old.
