One aspect to consider is where the urn will be placed after the memorial service or funeral. One that will be on display such as on the mantel will be very different from one that will be buried once the ashes have been scattered.

Consider also the style of the urn and the material it will be made of. The traditional ones are made of metal like pewter, bronze or brass. There are also wooden ones made of wood like maple and mahogany and there are also those made of stone like marble and granite. Glass ones are also available and the glass will usually be tinted or colored.

There is also a choice of making an urn by customizing a flower vase or a wooden box. The trend of customizing such containers from the home of the departed one is catching on. Simple items like beads are being used to customize such containers for instance with the name of the departed or their dates of birth and departure. Urns can also be customized through engraving of a photo, name, poem or other meaningful insignia. Another trend that is catching on is getting lockets and putting in a bit of the ashes of the departed one in them for loved ones.

Others choose to keep the one who has left them close by keeping the urn in the garden. It can even be made a focal point in the garden. Another option for an outdoor urn is one that is biodegradable. These are ideal if the ashes are to be scattered and then the urn buried. Biodegradable ones are an environmentally friendly option.

Cremation urns may also be selected that represent the occupation or mission of the deceased. For instance, the remains of a soldier who loses their life in active duty may be preserved in an urn that has military or government insignia such as flags, rifles, shields and other such symbols.

A cremation urn is an important and emotional purchase to make. Involve those close to the departed in choosing one or leave the arrangements to the funeral home director if this is preferred.
