What To Do If You Are Locked Out Of Your Home

Losing the key to your home is just the start of a traumatic experience

. When the discovery is made, the matter of what to do next is very much on your mind. In the event that it is the only key to your home, you will most likely need to find a qualified professional residential locksmith.

While this may not seem unreasonable difficult to do, there is more to it that you may imagine. A qualified locksmith is one that is licensed, bonded, insured, professional and has a marked vehicle. A business license is also a must.

Before you resort to your cell phone directory or phone book, call family and friends to see if there are any recommendations. Your best bet is using one that has a track record that you can follow. Not one that is just listed as an emergency locksmith in the directory.

There are some questions you need to ask before hiring someone to enter your home.

* Are they licensed?

* Do they have a storefront and commercial vehicle?

* Are they members of the "Associated Locksmiths of America"? They are key in licensing qualified locksmiths.

* Get an estimate of the charges before they come. Most locksmith charges are standard.

* Know if you have a "bump-proof" lock, and ask if the locksmith has to tools to deal with that. Drilling your lock as a first choice can be a danger sign.

* It is easy to have a master key made for all of your doors. The qualified locksmith will do this without difficulty. It is not expensive and is worthwhile.

*There are some unscrupulous people out there who will pose as locksmiths and have burglary as their primary employment.

When you make your initial phone call, listen closely to see if the person answering the phone identifies the business. If they do not, chances are they are not qualified locksmiths. Caution is the keyword in making your choice for someone to unlock your door and gain access to your home. Your security can be greatly jeopardized by phony locksmiths. It is up to you to choose intelligently and find one that is bonded and licensed.

Read a bit about locks before you need to call someone. Learn what a Primus lock cylinder is. Inquire as to the safety of your home locking systems. Consider deadbolt locks for added safety, but these too can be bumped. Bumping is the method by which a special key is inserted not quite fully into the lock. The lock is then bumped while the person inserting the key is gently turning the key. This will work on most door locks. It is not the type of lock you would prefer to insure that your possessions are safe.

If you have roadside assistance, you can call them for locksmith recommendations even if it is not your car. Their lists are extensive and you most likely will be directed to a qualified locksmith and not some fly-by-night person looking to make a few extra bucks. If the drill comes out first, the so-called locksmith needs to return to wherever they came from. A qualified professional locksmith will try other methods before drilling your lock out.

Be cautious and be safe.
