What To Do If You Drop Your Laptop
If you've dropped your laptop, you'll know the sickening feeling when you know it's
too late to catch it and that it's going to meet the floor or another hard surface. You'll also know how relieved you feel when you pick it up and it seems fine, or how annoying it is when you pick it up and find out that your laptop has sustained some damage in its fall. If you drop your laptop and damage it, there are a couple of troubleshooting tips you can consider trying before taking it to a repair shop.
The first thing you should ask yourself is whether the computer was switched on or off when it fell. When a computer is switched off completely, it is less likely to suffer memory or data problems in comparison to when it's on or in sleep mode. If your laptop is off after its fall, try turning it back on. If it struggles to turn on or makes strange noises as it tries, it's likely that it has an internal problem.
If the laptop makes beeping noises, then power it off and try switching it on again, counting the number of beeps it makes. The beeps are an error code, and technical-minded people may be able to look at the problem and fix it themselves, while non tech-savvy users will be able to tell the technician or support person they call what the problem appears to be by the amount of beeps counted.
If your laptop does turn on, then make sure you have a look at the way it lights up and check for black marks or cracks in the display. These can appear even when the outer layer of the screen looks absolutely fine. You'll also want to check the computer for any noticeable cracks or chips in the casing. These can be cosmetic and sometimes don't need to be replaced or dealt with immediately.
It can be easy to feel very relieved if you've got to the point where your laptop has switched back on and nothing seems to be amiss, but you need to also make sure you give your operating system a good look. It's possible that a damaged hard drive won't display its problems immediately, which means it could freeze or hang unexpectedly, or that some of your saved data could be missing. Therefore it's extremely important to start backing up your data straight away, whether with a memory stick, an external hard drive or even on disc if you're able to.
However, if your laptop is refusing to switch on at all or you suspect it has hard drive or motherboard problems, you may need to get an expert on board - and check whether your laptop is covered by your
home contents insurance.
