What To Do To Become A Hair Stylist

A career is cosmetology in a wise decision

A career is cosmetology in a wise decision. Whether you call them beauticians, stylists or hairdressers, they're always in demand. There is a cosmetology certification process that hairdressers need to go through in order to practice the art legally in every US state. Some states have more stringent requirements, but most require 1200-1800 hours of cosmetology school, also called beauty school, in order to be eligible to take the board certification exam.

Begin by registering in cosmetology school. Generally they offer different courses for manicurists and estheticians, plus a cosmetology course that teaches students how to cut and style hair, how to analyze the relative health of the scalp and hair, how to recognize diseases and disorders of the hair and scalp, how to straighten hair and how to create permanent waves, haircutting techniques using shears, razor and clipper cuts. In addition to hair styling, cosmetologists are also often taught how to do limited manicure and pedicure services, plus basics of massage and the anatomy of the feet, hands, head and shoulders.

Once cosmetology school is completed, most states require an examination for licensing. A written examination is one part of the test and a practical, or series of hands-on exercises shows the state board that you are ready to work as a professional hairdresser.

Recertification in many stated simply requires paying a fee to retain an active license. Rarely are stylists required to retest in order to continue practicing. It's important to be aware of the laws that govern your state at all times. Continued education may be accomplished outside of cosmetology school.

Ongoing education can help a stylist increase his or her earnings, skills and reputation. Regional and national hair shows are conventions where stylists can compete, learn about new products and take classes from reputable industry experts.
