Every family has its own traditions for various holidays
. In my husband's family, every year for Christmas his mother finds each member of the family an ornament with some personal significance. The first year we were married I received a glass globe ornament that looked just like the pattern on my wedding dress. Whatever your family traditions might be, set the standard every year for something new and fun.
Each year holidays come and go. The thing that really sets them apart is the fun and unique things your family does to make them different. In my family growing up, we always celebrated birthdays with a big dinner and lots of family around. I have friends that have big get-togethers every Labor Day and Fourth of July. If you're looking to add more traditions to your family's holiday routine, ask around and see what others you know like to do.
Make each holiday special by setting your own family traditions. Ask your children what they would like to do each year. If Christmas is your big family holiday, talk about Christmas Eve events and things you'd like to do to set it apart from the rest of the days in the year. What you do with your family is up to you. Make sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Traditions don't have to be elaborate and costly. I have a friend who makes each child a small Easter basket with a few gifts each year. Another mother of five likes to take her children hiking every Fourth of July. Making memories doesn't have to bankrupt you. Small and simple things are often the things your children will remember for years to come.
So if you don't have any set holiday traditions in your family ask around and get some good ideas. Talk to your children and your spouse about fun things you can do together to spend time as a family and create memories. Don't worry if you're not the creative type or have a lot of money to spend on activities. Do a few simple and fun things that your family will remember for years to come. Remember that you won't have kids at home forever so take advantage of the time you have and plan quality activities that will create lasting memories. You'll be so happy in the long run that you did.
