What To Expect At A Sports Medicine Doctor's Office

Have you ever had to go into an office that you've never been in before to go to an important meeting

? Or maybe you've had to go into job interviews and have had the same feeling - that buzzing, nervous feeling that you get in your stomach? It's definitely not a pleasant feeling. Some people get that same feeling when they have to go to the doctor's office, and many people get that feeling when they're going to visit a new doctor. If you have to visit a sports medicine doctor's office, there is nothing to be afraid of, as the process is very easy and can be very beneficial.

The Initial Visit

When you first visit the sports medicine doctor's office, the first thing that you will experience will be painless (maybe): paperwork! You'll be asked to provide information about yourself, including basic information about your health and your insurance information. Then you'll be asked to describe what specifically brings you to the office that day. This information helps the doctor to understand how you work and how healthy you are as a person in general.

Once you've gotten through the paperwork, the next step is the visit with the doctor. Sports medicine doctors are trained M.D.'s, and they're able to tell not only if there is a problem with your muscles and bones, but they can also help diagnose problems that don't relate to the joints and muscles. They may refer you to your regular physician, however, depending on any other issues they come across during your examination. You will undoubtedly undergo some type of tests that can help the doctor determine what your condition is and how best to treat it.

Once they have decided on a diagnosis, which may take additional testing, such as x-rays or an MRI, they will outline a course of treatment. This is the time when you can talk with the doctor about what you are feeling and how comfortable you are with the course of treatment that they are suggesting. Sometimes there are options, or alternatives, which you can take advantage of to ensure you feel more comfortable. This might include undergoing a certain type of physical therapy instead of taking medications. The doctor is there to help you get better and wants to work with you, not dictate to you.

Once you've gotten a course of action outlined, it's time to follow through. You may have to go to a physical therapist at the sports medicine doctor's office, or you may need to have medications put directly into the muscle in order to freeze it to release the pain. Whatever the doctor has recommended is what you need to try to help get your body back into good shape and feel as good as you possibly can. A sports medicine doctor is a great person to seek out for help with sports injuries, but you can also have other types of injuries, such as those sustained during work or in an accident, and this specialized doctor still may be able to help you.
