What To Expect From Your First Visit To A Health Club
Whether you've been invited to go with a friend or family member
, have received a free one day pass or have simply decided to try your local health club out for yourself, you'll no doubt have several preconceptions.
For instance, you may think that a gym and a health club are practically the same thing, with a health club simply being a more upmarket name for a gym.
The truth is that whilst they are similar in some respects, they can in fact be completely different places, able to be distinguished in the simplest form by a gym being somewhere you go to work out, whilst a health club is somewhere you go to get fit and healthy.
For example, if you think of a gym, you'll generally picture a room full of rows of treadmills and exercise bikes, which are surrounded by pieces of muscle development equipment, such as those which help with leg curls and shoulder and pectoral muscles.
There isn't likely to be any major facilities other than the gym equipment, with the exception of showers and a small refreshment area.
A health club, however, is likely to be entirely different.
To begin with, there's a good chance that there will be a whole range of different health services available, from therapeutic and physio water pools to personal massages by trained sports masseuses.
It would also be surprising if there weren't at least a handful of different sports available, which are most likely to be squash and badminton, as well as areas and courts for indoor football and tennis.
And whilst they will no doubt have a wide selection of exercise equipment, just like those that can be found in your local gym, the whole atmosphere will be a lot different. It's unlikely that you'll see any bodybuilders working out in a health club and there isn't a high chance that you'll hear loud dance music blaring out from the speakers, as you would often find in a gym.
Health clubs also generally have an array of different eating options in them, from the basic drink and snack vending machines to cafes or even small restaurants, serving food that is either healthy or aimed to help you perform for longer when exercising (i.e., high in carbohydrates to give you the energy and low in fats so you don't become lethargic).
Whilst health clubs and gyms do have the same basic aim in mind - to provide a health and fitness service to their members - they are otherwise completely different. With the latter being seen as a more intense, relatively basic and somewhat traditional way of exercising, the first usually provides everything you could want in a gym, plus a whole lot more.
Due to this reason, the membership fees for a health club are likely to be higher than that for a gym - which is arguably the reason why they're seen as a higher class establishment - but most would agree that for the fantastic services you can take advantage of; the additional money is worth every penny.
