What To Expect While Recovering From Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a very complex plastic surgery procedure
. It may take the patient up to six weeks before she can return to work or resume her normal activities.
The First Six Weeks after Breast Reconstruction
Patients can expect to stay in the hospital for several days after breast reconstruction surgery. They will need to return to their plastic surgeons offices a couple of times in the first few weeks after breast reconstruction surgery to have their drainage tubes and stitches removed.
Patients may experience some discomfort during the first few weeks after breast reconstruction surgery, including bruising and swelling. Pain medications can be prescribed to alleviate these symptoms. Its important to refrain from strenuous activities, exercise, and sexual intercourse for several weeks.
The First Several Months after Breast Reconstruction
Patients should be close to fully recovered approximately six weeks after breast reconstruction. However many patients may need to undergo secondary breast reconstruction procedures at this time. Nipple reconstruction is generally performed about six weeks after breast reconstruction surgery. Also, many patients are interesting in enhancing the shape of their natural breast now that their other breast has been created. This procedure is sometimes performed during breast reconstruction surgery; however, many times the plastic surgeon may wait and perform this procedure once the patient has healed from breast reconstruction. If either nipple reconstruction or natural breast refinement is performed, the recovery period will be extended by a couple of weeks.
What to Expect Regarding Scars
Patients who are recovering from breast reconstruction may be unhappy with the appearance of their scars. Scars are an inevitable result of breast reconstruction surgery. A skilled plastic surgeon can make sure that scars are as discrete as possible. They will also fade somewhat over time.
Your plastic surgeon should provide you with complete instructions to follow throughout the recovery period in order to help ensure that you heal as quickly and comfortably as possible.
