What To Know About Windows Vs Linux

The word LINUX is derived from the name Linus Torvalds and UNIX

. Linus Torvalds did a college thesis on writing a UNIX operating system that would work on PCs, from there the OpenSource community took the ball and ran with it and now we have Linux. The possibilities of Linux were so great that it created the Windows VS Linux debate.

Each time a new computer related device is invented the software industry has to come up with codes that will work with the new device and the result is a new 'version'. Linux is based around a Linux 'kernel' which is the foundation from which all other Linux software is developed. Windows comes out with new versions when they wish, but Linux keeps up with the times and after exhaustive testing, they release the latest version.

There are daily security updates and upgrades with Windows, but not with Linux. Linux does not come with all of the ports open, and only uses them when there is a need to connect to some server or daemon. You get the same features of automatic updates with Linux, and if you don't set it for auto you will see an icon blinking in the system tray, instead.

MicroSoft got there first and has proprietary rights to all of the drivers for most computer related devices, and is why most printers come with Windows or Mac drivers. Most of the companies are aware of Linux and some are beginning to include Linux drivers on the installation media. The Linux community continues to develop and improve these drivers and each new version has more drivers included.

If security is what you want, Linux is the operating system for you. Windows is notorious for security leaks, but Linux comes with all of the ports closed so that nothing is standing open for hackers to get in. Those ports only open on Linux when you start a program or service that needs a port, and then it close that port when you close the program.

There is a abundance of software for Windows, some of it is good and others are a waste. Linux has kept up with the demands of both office and multimedia. The OpenSource community developed alternatives to Windows Office. Novell is funding OpenSuSE Linux and uses OpenOffice for their Cloud Nine computing service. OpenOffice handles all Windows documents with ease.

Windows and Linux have a GUI interface for the installation process, but Linux provides the ability to move Windows over to its own partition and place Linux beside it. This does not mean you can run them at the same time, however, the Linux OpenSource community developed a program called WINE which allows putting Windows in a virtual box so you can run all your Windows programs from within Linux.

Linux has been around since 1990, and the OpenSource community continues to work diligently on improving and presenting libraries to accommodate everything from office applications to multimedia presentations. There will probably continue to be a debate as to which is best, but Windows VS Linux is becoming less of an argument, and more of a practicality of industry which needs an OS they can depend on for security and uptime dependability.
