If you have a child with special needs, he or she still needs to go to the dentist

. Whether the child is not able to communicate, hear, see, walk, or talk, teeth are still important. Some dentists might not know how to handle someone with problems, and it might scare your child. Look for someone with certain traits that would work well with him or her.

One trait that would be helpful for a dentist to have as he or she deals with children who have special needs is empathy. That is not pity. It is important for the professional to realize that this child has a problem and possibly will need more time than other children. Having an attitude of empathy is important.

Another trait to look for in a dentist for your child is that he or she likes kids. Your child might be fairly grown up, but may have the mentality of a child. Whatever the case, the dental professional should be able to put your child at ease and even make him or her laugh.

A dental office that is prepared for children with special needs may need distractions in the office. Televisions above the chairs, relaxing music, and even toys to hold during the procedures will all be helpful.

Every child is different, and there are so many differing syndromes and diseases that children have to face in their lives. It is important that children like this do not have their teeth neglected simply because it is harder.
