What To Look For In Your Watch Altimeter

It's almost essential to have an altimeter watch

, or some type of altitude reading equipment around when you are out in the woods or in the mountains. It is not only crucial for navigational purposes but also can make a huge difference in the level of safety that you enjoy.

They also have a tremendous number of additional features that can really make life easier out on the trail. While it is certainly possible to get a device that only reach altitude, it is a lot more common to find devices that offer altitude as well as have a lot more features.

Watches with altimeters come with not only altitude reading capability, but also barometric pressure, compass, thermometer, and a variety of other functions that you may need particular to where you are doing your outdoor journey. Although all the bells and whistles are nice to have, there are still just a few things that you need to take into consideration that are absolutely essential. All of these systems are amazing pieces of technological advancement however, they all do have limitations.

One very nice to have is the altimeter with temperature correction function. These are available on the higher-end watches only. Having this onboard will compensate for temperature differences in what affect that has on the altimeter reading. The cheaper units don't usually have compensators of any kind and you must do that math mentally.

Another aspect you need to take in consideration is the altitude bandwidth. Watches with altimeters should handle anything up to the highest point on Earth or around 33,000 feet. While this may never come up, it is nice to know that you bought a device that can handle the extremes of conditions on earth.

Furthermore, it is also good to have one with global positioning systems with GPS as well as direct barometric pressure readouts. With those two functions you can travel most anywhere and also do a bit of weather prediction while you're at it. Some watches even have trend capability where you can see how barometric pressure is heading. This will allow you to do some mild weather prediction, as well.

All in all, watches with altimeters can be a huge asset when you're in the wilderness. But, please pay attention to the details when you're looking at which one to purchase. It is possible to get a very high quality altimeter watch that has functionality far beyond your outdoor conditions, for a reasonable price - that is under $400. It's almost amazing that instrument like this exists at all, but especially a price this low.
