What To Look For When Trying To Find Network Security Services
Network security services are offered to companies by specialists who are able to manage all the safety aspects of a computer network system
. These companies are known as network security system providers or NSSPs. It is estimated that hackers now have an 88% success rate, but less than one in twenty of their targets are even aware of the breach of security in their computer systems and, of those, only 5% actually react.
It is also now known that 55% of personal computers are infected with some form of spy ware. With this ever-growing threat to businesses from malicious hackers and cybercriminals, spies, trojans and worms, the time has come to employ a network security service to provide protection for your computer system. The old adage 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' is really true here.
For the uninitiated, it is a daunting task to find out what to look for when it comes to network security services. Set out below are some of the key factors which ou should be aware of when trying to find the company best suited to handle your needs and expectations.
The NSSP should be able to offer regular vulnerability assessments and penetration testing to ensure that nothing bad has even a small chance of entering your system; and reports of these tests should be delivered to the client on a regular basis. It must offer perimeter security to configure your network infrastructure with firewalls and be able to manage this firewall system - which should include monitoring and maintenance of the firewall's traffic routing and - once again, traffic and management reports should be given to the client.
The company must have an intrusion detection management system and, should there be an attempt at penetration, the client has to be alerted immediately. Clearly, this area of protection should be updated regularly with new defense mechanisms, and it should have the ability to keep up with the actions taken by its competitors. In the unfortunate situation where a breach occurs, emergency support must be offered immediately and, once the problem has been solved, a forensic analysis should be performed.
The company must be able to offer content filtering services for your e-mail, as well as web security, for all traffic entering and exiting your system. This will block and exclude spam and other unwanted data.
You must ensure physical security, which means that only authorised users - both from your own company and from the network security services - will have access to your system, because once you employ an NSSP you will have to hand over some critical aspects of the control of your company to an outside party.
An obvious point is that your computer system must be monitored non-stop, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 52 weeks a year.
Finally, it is to be remembered that, after all is said and done, the NSSP will not be held responsible for any breaches of your system which may occur. You will ultimately be responsible for your own security, so you must be prepared to closely manage the network security service to ensure that you get the services you are paying for.
