To have beautiful skin we need to avoid the harmful rays of the sun. UV-A and UV-B rays are there all through the day but UV-A rays are more evident before 10 o'clock in the morning and after three o'clock in the afternoon. The nastiest time to be exposed to the sun is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Due to the commonness of malignant skin cancer among Caucasians, sunblocks have become a necessity even among non-Caucasians. All skin types can build up cancer if there is overexposure to UV-B rays over a period of years. Exposure to the sun is cumulative. The harm that is done is also cumulative so a little bit now and a little bit later all adds up.

But what kind of sunblock should you use? There are two basic types of sunblock: the chemical and the blocking type. Chemical sunblocks don't come out white on the skin buy may cause irritation because they penetrate the skin. If you are lucky enough to have skin that's not too sensitive to chemicals and you fear displaying around a "mime" look, a chemical sunblock is what you're looking for.

Chemical sunblocks have three kinds, depending on the active ingredient in the product: avonbenzone, padimate-o and oxybenzone. Well known brands of the avonbenzone category include Lancome and Avon. While Coppertone brands uses the active ingredient oxybenzone.

Avonbenzone is the most helpful protection against UV-A among the chemical types while the least irritating is the padimate-o sunblocks.

If you're susceptible to allergies, you may be more secure with the blocking type than with the chemical sunblock. Blockers repel the UV rays from your skin. The sunblock just stays on the surface of your skin so you're not likely to have allergic reactions.

Blocking types have two categories: titanium dioxide and Z-cote. Brands that belong to the first group include Clinique, Derm Plus, Nu Derm and Shiseido. Titanium performs as a physical sunblock. Since it is opaque, the sun's rays cannot soak through the blockade and it even deflects the rays of the sun away from the face. There are fewer reactions to titanium sunblocks than with other types but cosmetically, it's not acceptable because you can't go parading yourself with a white face.

The second category in the blocking type is the Z-cote which is the most transparent among all sunblocks. Clarins is among the best brands using Z-cote.
