What Urban Legends Are And Why They Are Vastly Prevalent
There are few tales that are more fascinating and actually spell-binding as a good urban legend
. These are seen as a current anomaly that sociologists and folklorists do not find in what are generally known as archaic cultures. For whatever reason, in our current society there is an inclination to take stories with a sensational feel to them and reiterate them, often telling that they start from 'a friend of a friend'. Seeing that the real teller of these tales are not often recorded, these people passing the information along can't be held accountable for the truthfulness of the whole story. This seems to ease the transit of from person to person and raise the velocity at which the urban legends zoom throughout our planet.
While the phrase urban legend was originally used by a University of Utah English teacher named Jan Brunvand in 1968, it would not be until 1981 that the common person would discover these tales as a actual societal tradition. Professor Brunvand's publication, The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends & Their Meanings, remains a collection of contemporary legends that were well-known in the United States around that point in time. By exploring these tales, Brunvand concluded that historians and those that analyzed human cultures could find out a great deal about our current civilizations in the world today.
Certainly if don't always buy into urban legends they can be in some ways engrossing and every so often have a partial level of truth. Whether the style these legends are displayed as is hilarious or horrifying, the results produced are the same: the urban legend is absorbed by those who listened to it and given that the legend's dramatic impact, it is probable that the listener will ultimately repeat these tales. Just as in the Broken Telephone Game that children play, as the legend is relayed from one person to the next,, it starts to morph. This is the reason you will usually take note of varying renditions of a modern tale in several parts of our planet.
In some tales, the legend is based somewhat on actual events, like Bloody Mary which may be loosely based on Queen Mary. Other times, these accounts are simply very creative and hook our attention, such as the report that went on the Internet for more than a decade about a serial killer that used recordings of a crying baby to get females from their homes and kill them.
Now that the Internet is here to assist us, we can spread urban legends at a mind boggling pace. One can rest assured that the appearance of recent electronics will just create new and stranger legends as time continues.
