What Was I Doing Wrong?
I grew up in a family that had to eat only low fat or non fat foods due to my father having high triglycerides and mom had high cholesterol
. Meat was cut from our diet more and more. Milk too had to be skimmed. Everything in our cupboards had to be low fat. So what was the reason behind our health issues? We were eating how the doctor told us to. What then was the reason behind our obesity?
When I was a child, my mom taught me how to buy and fix our meals. She was an excellent cook. While using the skills mom taught me, The cooking methods, which we were using, were totally on the wrong track. Everything we consumed had to be low fat too. Didn't we consider all fat to be bad fat?
Then I started reading more about Omega 3 and fatty acids. How we need this type of fat to keep the cells in our bodies healthy. How hearts, brains, skin, and many more parts of our bodies suffer when we don't get enough . How due to the poor health of your cells, they don't communicate and the bad fluids cannot be secreted out from the outer membrane. They also don't allow the nourishments that keep you healthy in. When your cells aren't healthy they stop communicating to each other, it is possibly that is when cancer may sneak in on you. We all dread the possibility that one fine day we find ourselves afflicted with cancer.
Along with the fear of keeping poor health, getting proper treatment in the US is not as cheap as it used to be. With health insurance going higher and higher, less money comes home in the pay check each week. The deductibles are going up making it feel almost impossible to seek help if you are sick . Some just go to their beds and die.
Doing some simple changes to your life may help you eliminate some of the diseases you may face as you age. Getting omega 3 into your every day diet is a major need. Your body desperately needs this essential fatty acid.
Without omega 3, along with possibly having cancer enter your life, your blood could thicken up causing blood clots in your veins leading to heart problems, strokes, and death.
When omega 3 was given to animals experiencing heart attacks, it helped to calm the fluttering ventricles and turned out to be a life saver.
I like my mother kept a tab on the quantity of meat we ate in our meals. What did we substitute it with? Carbohydrates is what I was feeding my family. Potatoes and noodles became our staple diet. I didn't allow them a lot of desserts, just cookies. Now I get to see, what a cookie is. It is full of saturated fats or trans fats, sugar, white flour, there is nothing in a cookie but the taste that is good.
Was there any of the omega 3 fatty acids in our daily foods we ate? Only one, fish sticks. That is the only fish I can get my family to eat. The mac and cheese we ate with it got eaten better along with the peas.
Are you doing the same thing I was taught to do? Surviving just on carbohydrates and letting the meat slide off the menu. Are you putting on weight and don't know why?
You need to look at the low fat stuff you are eating. If there's no fat, its alright, but you need to keep an eye on the sugar and sodium content as well. I love a certain type of low fat peanut butter. I coaxed my husband to buy it for me even though he saw that the regular peanut butter was cheaper. I at last looked at the ingredients of my favorite peanut butter. I discovered the reason behind my liking it. It had lots of sugar to make up for the fat they took out.
Peanuts have traces of omega 3 in them. Not a lot, it's the English walnuts that are really rich in omega 3. I don't eat those.
Now that I have seen all that has been damaging my health, it's time that I took some drastic steps. I tried salmon and my family fully supported me. Sardines are not for us either. I do like tuna but it does not contain much of omega 3.
Cooking in canola oil helps to meet some of our daily omega 3 requirement, but not enough. The best way to overcome the problem is to take supplements. 3 capsules of flax seed oil per day helps to meet our requirement for this essential fatty acid. Meat has slowly come back into our diet and instead of chilly spaghetti, we prefer to eat chilly. Sometimes I do put it over a few leaves of lettuce. I do enjoy that.
Now its entirely up to you how you want to get your omega 3 for the day. If your family can eat fish, its great. If they can't eat fish, then like my family, you desperately need to find other ways to get enough every day.
Look at your own diet. See what are the changes you need to make. Don't wait until cancer enters the life of someone close to you, or a heart attack happens. You should try to make changes in your lifestyle and dietary habits, so that you and your family lead a better and a healthy life. You should remember that your children are growing and learning from you as I did from my mom. I thought she did every thing right. She thought she was too. I am quite lucky. I still have the blessings of both my parents, they are turning 81 this month. Mom also learned to cut things from their diet a while back. It has helped.
Not many people have both parents enter into their 80's. Oh, they also take omega 3 daily.
