What Would You Use Electroluminescent Wire For? Some Ideas For Projects

There are two properties that really make electroluminescent wire a standout for certain projects

. First it is completely flexible, you can tie it in knots and bows if you have to and second it gives out no heat when it lights up. This is called cool lighting and is very useful for detailing and decorating projects where heat and energy use are a consideration.

Take the field of electric textiles for example. Any electronic installation effectively designed to be worn by someone really needs to give out as little heat as possible, for reasons of health and safety let alone comfort, electroluminescent wire is therefore perfect for creating stage costumes and other esoteric or out-there clothing projects.

If you ever saw Daft Punk perform, or watched the remake of Tron, you have already seen electroluminescent wire in action. The weird glowing silhouettes common to both examples are achieved by lining the major portions of the suit in EL wire, so the person inside can be seen even when all the lights are turned out. As noted, this makes the substance ideal for stage design specifically where a futuristic or in some way out of the ordinary effect should be achieved. Costumes for club dancers and decorations in nightclubs may also use this type of material.

In fact, if you have ever been to a nightclub and use a glow stick or some of that glow wire, which you wrap around your head and your wrists to get yourself noticed while you dance then the principles of electroluminescent wire are already available to you. The actual substances involved in the glow stick are completely different that is proper phosphorescence, whereas the phosphor in electroluminescent wire is activated by current but the overall effect is broadly the same.

Chemical molecules (in the case of EL wire, the phosphor coating the interior strand of thick copper wire) are excited by an external stimulus or some kind of reaction. When the wire is concerned, this is an external stimulus passed backwards and forwards between the cooper wire trunking and a satellite wrap of fine wire. The two wires together form a coaxial capacitor with roughly 1 nF of capacitance the capacitor is charged and discharged so quickly that the phosphor on the internal copper trunking becomes agitated and light is emitted.

The major difference in effectual terms between the glow stick and glow wire noted above, and the electroluminescent wire, is that EL wire will glow for as long as a current is passing backwards and forwards between the two components of its internal capacitor. A glow stick is a purely chemical reaction, excited by the act of breaking the tube and which winds down eventually over the course of a night. Whereas, an EL wire is a similar reaction prolonged indefinitely by the switching on and off of rapid current charges.

Electroluminescent wire is so efficient that a pretty long length of it can be powered for hours by a pair of AA batteries. This makes it ideal for a number of applications.
