What You Can Learn From Manhunt The Video Game To Survive
Rockstar Game's Manhunt came from the shadows back in 2003
, and it changed video game violence forever. The game was made strictly for adults, and with good reason, because it was filled with blood and death, and it made the Grand Theft Auto series look happiness and light. It appealed to people's dark side and would spawn a sequel, and like many other controversial video games it is still selling well today. While simulators are always second best when it comes to actual training the principals it teaches are sound even if the ethics of the storyline are questionable. Unlike most games were you take on legions of enemies with no problem in Manhunt you face the gritty reality of close combat.
You begin the game as James Earl Cash a death row inmate who should have died by lethal injection, but instead you wakeup in a run down part of the city, and you're given an offer you can't refuse by a shadowy individual known as the Director. The Director Lionel Starkweather is an insane Hollywood insider who makes horror films and pornography and is branching out into snuff films, and he has drafted you to kill gang members on film. The director is voiced by actor Brian Cox who played Hannibal Lecter in the film adaption of the book Red Dragon which was named Manhunter before it was remade when Anthony Hopkins took on the role. Needless to say Cox's portal is chilling throughout the game. In order to win you have to hack and slash your way through all kinds of gang members and mercenaries.
The game might sound like your typical slasher flick, and it is pretty dark, but it is also realistic. As you move Cash through the urban environment you soon realize how easy it is to die in hand to hand combat. The game realistically portrays fights, and if there are two or more enemies attacking at once your toast. Weapons like baseball bats, crowbars, and blades make a big difference in a fight, but they don't guarantee victory either. You learn quickly that you have to be stealthy, and the best route to take is eliminating enemies one at a time. Sometimes runaway and hiding, and waiting to ambush your enemies is your best option. Also like in real life if you show up with a gun the fight ends real fast.
The idea of a violent death row inmate hunting down and killing gang members for the entertainment of others is a pretty dark concept, but it illustrates how tough and ruthless you need to be in order to survive. Hopefully you never have to be in a situation where you have to kill or be killed, but if you use your head and what you learned in training you'll at least have a fighting chance. So stay safe and don't stop fighting until you're free and clear.
