What You Need For A Camping And Backpacking Trip With John Baisden
Spending time in the great outdoors can be good for your body and your soul
. Humans are supposed to be outside often. If you're ever feeling cooped up or tired of the daily grind, usually the first thing people do is head to a park or somewhere where nature dominates, not concrete.
But to really appreciate all that nature has to offer, you should consider getting out for a few days and backpacking or camping in a national or state park. Of course, you need to be prepared for the elements and plan your trip ahead of time. It's important to know where you're going, how long you'll be there, and to make sure you have the right supplies.
But what does someone do who has never really gone backpacking or camping? You need to first of all make sure you have the right equipment. John Baisden has spent years backpacking, hiking, and camping in national parks all over the country. There are quite a few basics that you need to have to make sure your first (of man) backpacking trips is a success. Here are a few suggestions for you when you gather the necessary equipment.
Sleeping Bag: If you're just starting out, don't throw down hundreds of dollars on a high-quality down sleeping bag. You're better off with a low to mid price synthetic bag. They are easier to take care of and use than the down. You're not going to be doing anything extreme starting off.
Jacket: You're going to definitely want a water repellant jacket or shell to keep the elements off you when things get nasty. This is one of the most important pieces of equipment to have when backpacking. Feel free to spend a little extra on this if you have the money.
Shoes: Make sure you purchase hiking boots or trail shoes. These can be expensive but they will last for a very long time. Make sure they can keep the elements out as well. No one likes wet feet.
GPS/Maps: Make sure you get maps for the area you will be backpacking in. Better yet, get a GPS if you're used to using them and you'll always know where you are.
Cookware: You can get a fancy individual compact cooking system or the traditional cookware that serves multiple people. Make sure someone on your trip knows how to use them though! These are absolute musts. You can't live on Cliff bars alone!
Tent and Backpack: These can get expensive, so don't go overboard if you don't plan to backpack often. If possible, get a backpack only and find someone who has a tent for two or more and go on your trip with them.
Hopefully this helps you get prepared for a fun and exciting backpack or camping trip! Have fun out there.
